Not sure of their specs, but both Giant and Silverback have very good reputations and have very good after sales service. Both are also good value for money, but Silverback normally pips Giant to the post when it comes to value.

Get the salesman to explain the components to you what is better etc. If they are equal in these terms get the one that looks better to you.

Longbarn thank you for replying. as far as i can see they are both about the same. but i have one person telling me one thing and another telling me something else.

At this point i think i am just going to bit the bullet and buy the silverback. I would like to get it be for the winter sets in. Not sure if its to late with the way JHB weather has been lately.

I can get it for a very good price. and i think it is a lot pretty than the Giant :) yes i am a girl :)

Hi Rookie,

The bike you are looking for will depend on the use thereof. Just a quick couple of questions:

  1. What will you be using the bike for: Road or Off Road, or both?

  2. Do you require the bike to participate in cycle events?

  3. if you are participating ion Cycle events, will you be a social rider or Competitive?

Depending on how you answer these questions will determine the suitability of the bike required.

The Silverback has a marginally better fork, but the cassette is rubbish. The Giant is 9sp with slightly better components, but you'll take a bit of a hit on the fork - I'd say go for the Giant and upgrade the fork when the bug bites. There's not enough of a difference between the two to justify the crappy drivetrain on the Silverback.

Hi Bikaholic,

  1. What will you be using the bike for: Road or Off Road, or both:I plan to do many road but some off road. Riding with the family I have a young son.
  2. Do you require the bike to participate in cycle events? I would like to do a few cycle races once I get the feel of riding the bike.
  3. if you are participating ion Cycle events, will you be a social rider or Competitive? I will be a social rider, i have no intention to be come competitive. Maybe in a few years when I have been bit i will buy a road bike.

I have a 2012 Silverback Stride 10 with the same drive-train (still going strong after 20 months and just about 4000km with only the chain replaced at about 2000km). I would not worry too much about the drive-train, it simply works (and rather well at that).

After all this time cycling I realized what a better bike is and that it costs on the expensive side of R10k (Like the Sola 1 a lot). Most of the bikes in the R5k price range are quite bullet proof and also last well (if you maintain them properly).

Couple of nice things on the Silverback:

1. Gear Cable hoses are fully enclosed, so little mud/dirt can get in (smoother shifting for longer)

2. Fork has an hydraulic lockout (which means you can lock it out while cycling, no need to stop and remove all weight from the fork to lock it out)

My Stride 10 doesn't have any of these and I wished it did!

I bought my bike in the middle of winter and also started cycling because of my son (bought him a bike for his birthday and couldn't resist!).

Thing about winter in Jhb is simply to cycle in the early afternoons when its not too chilly.

Hey Sprinkle. I bought a Slade 4 in December, I opted for medium as my previous bike was a med(26") - got it wrong, I loved the ride but I found the silverback frame sizes wrong for my measurements. I ended up getting a women's silverback splash1 and I love her. Where you based? Give your measurements to the LBS and ask them to help you out, I went to Summit in Midrand.

The cassette is the last thing that should affect your descision. The only difference between the best and the worst cassette is the weight and how long they last. Generally the cheaper cassettes last longer because they are made to last and not too be light. Cassettes are wear and tear items anyway and will have to be replaced at some point.

At this point you should forget about all the technical stuff, it will drive you crazy. Just get yourself a bike and ride it. The most important thing is to make sure the size is right for you. Any reputable bike shop will do this as part of the purchase experience.

Value for money bikes to look out for are Silverback, Giant, Merida, Trek, Momsen, Axis, GT
