regular swimming builds endurance and increase your cardio-vascular fitness, but so does cycling.think you will get more benefit from cycling more.

if you dont have a indoor trainer and weather is bad then swimming is a good substitute to increase your fitness.

Last year I decided to train for Ironman. I kept my cycle training as is and added swimming and running. Within a few weeks I noticed a huge improvement in my cycling, especially on the hills.

 

I'm not sure which of the 2 disciplines helped me, but I'm willing to bet that swimming played a huge role.

Did you lose any weight while doing all the running training? would explain the improvement on the hills!

 

I've also started a lot of swimming at the moment, I find that I work much harder and after about 20 minutes of swimming I am a lot more stuffed than 1hr od spinning.

swiming is especially good for your cycling because it take place in a oxygen deprived enviroment. you take less and deeper breathes while swimming..and your body becomes accustome to take in more oxygen into the lungs and use it more effictively..with other words it  increases your VO2 max..which could aid you tremondously on climbs.. by the way swimmers have the highest VO2 max in general.

Dont over do it though, because you can build muscles that you don't really need for cycling. and then its just extra mass.
