Have seen the skewer lever on different sides of bikes. Which side should the lever be? Shimano say on the opposite side of the rotor.

Have I answered my question right there?

Doesn't really matter but I run mine on the left. Guess I just like them away from the rear derailleur.

My feeling exactly.

Rear left side , front is Sram thru axle and they put the skewer lever on the right.

Might be a good reason it's on the right - put the locking force closest to the drive force/cassette?

Mmm now I'm thinking!

Fox/Shimano left and Rockshox right. Just so you cannot get confused. That's why. No rocket science involved. Thats for thru axles, so Shimano is contradicting themselves with your statement above.

Traditionally on the left - from road bikes, away from the RD and no brake rotors to worry about.

I still run mine both on the left cos I'm OCD, and I know there are others like me. Front on the right is easier because there's less chance of touching your rotor when putting the wheel on (touching the rotors is the #1 cause of squeaky brakes.)

And as above, QR15 and 142 x 12 it's decided for you by the manufacturer.
