2014 Epic - Top local amateur/ privateers?

Wondering who will be the top dogs who have 'real' jobs.

I am talking about the 5am training crowd, (not the 9am euro starters or the guys who consider themselves semi-pros).

These are the guys who have to take leave for the week, or if they run their own shop, its 'no work no pay' week.

Thinking here of:

Munnik/ Davies

Hanekom/ Lamond

etc

Would be nice to see one of these teams crack a top 20.

Who else fits this category?

i think the Hanekom brothers(legendary apple farmers from witzenberg valley) deserve this since epic is in the heart of harvest season.

I'd like to see the following categories, maybe on thehub we can identify who fits them, in some cases it might need to be just one rider in the team.

* top privateer team

* top camping team

* top team on 26ers

* top v-brake team$

* top singlespeed team

* top rigid team

* top team on 'budget bikes'%

$ yup v-brakes were at XC world champs at pmb last year on one of the lesotho bikes so it's not impossible

% i would thumbsuck a budget bike as something weighing more than 14kg, probably with alivio or equivalent. then again there might be some long travel 'comfort bikes' that are quite pricey, so i suppose anything under 10grand should be a good marker(when the entry fee costs R25k pp).

I see an amateur/funrider as a person who works full time and cycling is not a priority in terms of responsibility, this will mean he is actually employed full time working a full day.

Most of our "pro's" considering themselves non-pro's...their "work" fall into their training programs/time slots.

The "amateur" rider: I am no pro...I work dude!

Me: but you train till 10AM and home by 16:00 to rest?

The "amateur" rider: but I still work

Me: You travel to all the races how do you manage to get all the leave days?

The "amateur" rider: My work is very flexible and allow me to train

Me: So you basically a pro that works for a hobby?

The "amateur" rider: No way man, I work everyday from 10AM to 14:00.

In the Western Cape I see Mr Davies and Mr Garrett as the two best amateurs. Very talented riders!!

I will put my 2c in

In the Grand Masters category:

Epen Espach and Corrie Mulder for a podium position.

If the Hanekom bros are riding I'll pick them.

Masters: Wilson & Enthoven

Grand Masters: Mclean & Zoerweg

Think you summed it up well - and picked two top riders.

Its likely to be of the guys honing their form at KIllarney and on the road, because they aren't paid to do the MTN races thing.

Also likely to be the guys getting the biggest support on Sunday - for me that says a lot.
