also recently got in trail running.

currently still only doing the shorter distances.

but looking ahead, i see ALOT of the longer distances require you to take your own water with.

when i buy a Camelbak-type hydration system, i really only want to buy one. One that i can use for longer and shorter (if needed) distances.

there are so many to choose from, its actually confusing.

any thoughts?

i have seen those with pockets in the front for water bottles, and then the more traditional ones with the reservoir at the back.

looking at the prices , the CamelBak ones (marathon vest) is ALOT cheaper than the Salomon alternative.

Also on the look for a pack... but I've heard something regarding those UltraSpire packs. I think it was the Solace... Apparently to keep bobbing minimal, the bladder is right next to your back. Which helps the bobbing... but it makes that the water heats up quickly...

Comments and experiences?

Also, what's the diffs between Titan, Solace and Omega (all 2l packs).

It is true that the Salomon packs are ridiculously expensive, but I can tell you that it is the bees knees!!

The beading around the pack edges keeps it tight to your body with the help of the cross chest straps which are super comfortable.

The bladder sits nicely on your back within a isolated sleeve, keeping it from heating up.

There's plenty space to store things and no bobbing whatsoever even on a rough trail.

I really can recommend them (imo of course)

Edit....

Oh and the quick release between the bladder and pipe makes for quick no mess no fuss refilling.

I tried a buddies one and like Izak sais it is damn rad. But I dont have the cash for that so I just run with my Deuter mtb one it has a chest and stomach strap and it I tighten it, it does not bob. What I do with my bladder is half fill it, blow it up with air till full and then put it on its back in the freezer. Depending on the lenghth of the activity I add more or less water befor freezing. That helps a lot.

I was very lucky and bought a second hand (but worn only once) one here on the hub for R1500.

I am a bit of a Salomon freak however (can fill up at least one double bed with Salomon stuff  ... Shoes, shorts, shirts, Ts, hydration packs, peaks etc.

my 2c. The more I run the more I find myself leaning towards systems that carry two bottles in the front as this allows you to 1) have water and energy mix in separate bottles 2) refills are nice and quick 3) cleaning afterwards is easy and painless 4) I always overfill a hydration bladder and end up lugging around unnecessary weight. For the Beast I am going to take the bladder out of my Marathoner and see how the bottles hold up.

On the Salomon subject, I am def getting one in the near future, don't think you can compete with them in terms of quality. However they are def a nice to have, alot of people run with very basic pack sand they serve their purpose just fine.

thanks for the input - sounds like i will need to save up for a the solomon pack.

like i said , i dont want to buy a "entry level" pack for R1000 , only to buy a "proper" pack 3 months later for R2000.

also like the idea of having water bottles in front.

but http://www.nativesport.co.za/hydrate-wisely-ultraspire/?sort=featured&page=1have got some good specials running at the moment -

pic taken at the Ultra trail champs last weekend (which i saw on facebook ) - all different packs - of which 2 has the water bottles in front

Pieter1 does not know there's tannies that's going to klap him for that!   :whistling:

I decided to go for the NativeSport specials and just ordered the Omega this morning. Might be overkill for my current abilities, but for the money and the reviews I've read, it seems I can't be too far wrong in going for that.
