Good day,

As you might know, parts wear out, some faster than others, some never...

I have some of my parts since 2007. Worn part obviously replaced when they break, others still working fine for me, like the rear and front derailleurs, chain rings, sprockets, discs etc.

Chain rings:

Damaged on some of the big chaining teeth, but never missed or slipped a gear. The others still look fine.

Chain:

Stretched, needs replacement anyhow so I went into mud and water with it.

Rear deralleur:

Replaced wheels, still working fine

My problem now is the following: (Problem occurred after the muddy ride)

They chain hops on all three chain rings if power is applied. Put a spare chain on (also old but not as stretched as the Fu*&ed chain) and it hops less.

Is hopping on the front chain ring due to an overstretched chain?

What is the symptoms of a stretched chain?

thanks

Sounds like its time to get Mr Wallet out and buy a new chain, cassette and 3 chainrings, assuming none of those have been replaced since 2007! It would be false economy I think to just buy a new chain or chainring.

I think you should replace the chain and chain rings.

Edit, Agree w Mojoman, better to replace cassette as well.

took too long, looks like you have to replace chain rings if I read your post correctly, amongst other things

my road bike is a 2005 and never replaced anything other than a derailler that broke in a crash. BTW, the bike piles on kms since I use it for commuting, Argus and the odd PPA ride. ( I put on 5000km last year alone)

It doesn't slip or skip a beat but I must get my wallet out when I take it for its service, its gonna be painful, so i think im in a worst boat, but hell did this bike give me a good run, hence I don't touch it other than cleaning it

Yip, once you advance beyond the point of no return...i.e. using your drivetrain for that "extra" 1000+km...before replacing soemthing that HAD WORN INDIVIDUALLY...then the only option left is to start resh & anew...with all 3 items replaced.

In the long run it is probably still the cheaper option...i.m.h.o.

The self learning idiot tried only the chain, (still keeping in mind all the good tips mentioned above) and the problems still exists... So the chainrings needs replacement...

The next question. Do I need to remove the crank in order to remove all the chainrings? The two big ones are removed. (did not try the smaller one yet)
