you'll be fine with a 1 X 11

I rode it on a rohloff setup a few years ago which also does not have the full range that a 2x10 setup will give you and there was only one very short section that I could not ride. You seem to be a stronger rider and will have a much lighter bike, so no need to worry

I have been invited to ride S2S in 2015. I currently Ride a 2 x 10 XT setup with a 38 / 24 front and 36 / 11 Rear. Bike is a BMC TE02 and Medium hard tail.

I am upgrading my frame to a BMC TE01 and as my current drivetrain is worn I am looking to change to XTR 2x10 or XX1 1x11.

I am 181 cm tall, 83 kg. 39 years old. I am a fit rider as confirmed by VO2 max testing done at the Prime institute in Durban.

I race XC marathon and I am competitive in my age category. As far a technical ability I can ride the trails at Karkloof (the difficult options) with my XC Hard tail setup.

I am very comfortable on the 2x 10 but the 1x 11 has undeniable advantages. I am going to be racing Sani and have never ridden it so would appreciate any info that you guys could give me. I am obviously concerned of not having a low enough gear for really steep climbs, I also don't want to spin the hell out of my legs to go any where.

What can you tell me....

Thanks

Ryan

Why do you want to complicate a good thing .The enemy of good is better ,Your setup is all that you will ever need and it is affordable .Chain such only happens when it rains all the time ,not from the occasional muddy patch .Even then you will be able to ride most of the event in your big gear

if its muddy, 2x10 sucks, literally.

1x10 or 1x11 is great.

also fitting the 42t rear sprocket to the cassette, will assist in getting you up any of the short steep stuff, or give some respite to the long farm road climbs on day 2

Pansie you have 34 x 10

If you are heavy, like me, 2 x 10 is better. the bailout gear helps, but not a lot. OK I am 94kg so I felt it last week end. 10km k limb at 11%.

but I did spin a lot easier with the 24 x 36 than he did on the 34 x 42 discounting the 25kg weight disadvantage I had.

You can't compare 24x36 to 34x42 He will work a lot harder 24 x36 = 30x42 your closes to a 2x10 (11-36x24/38) would be 32T

OK... I am not nearly as fit as you sound.. But.... I ride a 28-42 and 11-36 and on day 1 and day 3 I used 42 and 11 together a lot.. Even on day 2 actually... So you will lose that. Secondly on day 2 I used my 28 on the front on both sides of the nandos watering point and at least once or twice on a couple of the small steep bits of single track... You will likely get away with only one chain ring for those.. But I fear you will be spinning on the other end of the spectrum

Hi Ryan, not to get to technical but what are these advantages? Besides the small amount of weight and the simplicity on the bar and looking like a pro, i cant see any use of spending that kind of money to have less gears. Maybe its cause i'm not fit enough and will never be able to ride on only 11 gears.

Its not just about saving weight, its about a more simpler setup. One shifter, smoother, quicker shifts :)

Oh a and Blitz, i see you like riding trails, the XX1 is just so damn awesome on trails. With tight sections and sudden steep climbs you just hear the crack and creak sounds of the 2 x 10 riders but one little quiet twist on mine and i am gone.

Gerhard .i use me Ss when I want quiet .36x18

You can do Sani on your sisters bike .And if breaks there are enough spares and other riders on the route to build another bike from scratch

Did it last year on a 1x10, front 32t back 11-36t. Yeah of course I pushed up some hills but it was easier than I expected.

If I trained a bit more and was almost fit I would use a 34t front. You'll be fine.
