Here comes the race leader. He takes the stage by 17 seconds over Aru.

I reallty thought Aru had that stage if you looked the way he was riding and suffering.Quintana makes it look so easy like he just cruising.Almost like those professional golfer that swing so easy but hit the ball for miles.Awesome.

I'm not sure that this stage did the Giro any favours. Such a big and difficult climb for an ITT? It just seems to me that it's knocked holes between the GC contenders that are just too big, and in the process has let some of the air escape out of the competition.

It's as if the Giro organisers wanted to make a big statement. They wanted to up the stakes for the sake of theatre. But for me, it backfired. Yesterday you could cover much of the top 10 with a blanket. There was tension and drama every time one of them made the slightest move. Yesterday was one of the best days of racing in this years Giro because of that. I feel as though some of that tension has now gone.

We've got an absolute monster tomorrow. The Zoncolan. I just hope we see some great battles among the guys who think they can still make podium. But to be honest, the Zoncolan is just too hard for people to think about attacking. All they're doing is just trying to survive and not suffer the embarrassment of getting off and walking. So it ends up being a procession of riders slowly clawing their way to the top, long ago having given up any thoughts except how to get each pedal to keep turning over.

I hope I'm wrong, and that we will see fully committed GC boys still eager and motivated to do some serious racing tomorrow.

Gilberto Simoni, the 2007 winner of the first time the race went up from the Ovaro side: "It was like a slow, steady execution. The easiest part of this climb is harder than the most difficult you ever get at the Tour de France."

After an earlier recon, he had a compact 50/34 crankset installed and went up the climb using a 34x27 gear. And he's a world class climber. The autobus guys will go up with a mtb cassette.

For me it is refreshing to see a stage that (almost) decided the event on individual climbing ability rather than who's got the best domestiques.

The finish of the Pink Dragon. The grassy slopes at the summit make for an amazing natural sporting amphitheatre. True to form, there's no letup all the way to the finish line. It's just brutal.
