I'm seriously in the market of buying a mountain bike. I've been convinced to get one now, as I'm a sturn roadie  (although i've been quite interested in the mtb side of things as well for additional riding time and experience)

Firstly I have no idea what size to look for... My road bike is a 58cm if that is anything to go by.

My question is, how much mountain bike can i get for R30k? Ideally I'm looking for a carbon hard tail 29er.

I can get a new Bianchi Ethanol 27.1 Shimano XT/Deore which I suppose is not a bad deal.

Any advise would be appreciated

For 30k you can probably get a Giant XtC 29er? I bought a Anthem Advanced 29er for little over that, dually though.

But I guess if you shop around a good Scott, Giant, Momsen etc with full XT or X9/X0 groupo's with ZTR wheels, Fox / Reba/SID fork for around that?

That is what I would have wanted at least for 30k in HT 29er arena.

If you want to pay a little more just to have the "right" name on your decals, you'll probably looking at a aluminium Stumpy with X7/X9.

In terms of size, I would say you're probably between a Large and XL, depending on your riding style etc.

I'm 1.85 and fit a 56cm road bike and Large Giant MTB comfortably.

Alu stumpy is R20k. Carbon stumpy with xt/x9 is R 26500. That being said, I would buy one of the Momsens. Edited by Johny Bravo

Why hard tail and why 29er?

Why hard tail and why 29er?

I understand that hardtail is a good all rounder and good for general racing as well. I was told that the duals suck up quite a bit of pedal power. 29er I understand is a better rolling wheel especially over rugged terrain...

Good price for a great bike. I have one and its superb.

I really am interested in this bike... it was just the sizing that i'm not to sure about. However I'm going to the bike shop this afternoon to make sure if an XL will fit me. If so, I'll definitely look into buying this bike

Not if you're bike has proper suspension and set up correctly. This topic has been discussed endlessly on the Hub. HT if you're a podium chaser. Otherwise dually.

Give these okes a tinkle...

I agree. Would hate to see you send 30k on a HT only to find that a FS might have suited you better as you get more into MTB'ing. Test ride a few bikes and don't ignore 27.5/650b range.
