Took the plunge and equipped my new Tri bike with electronic shifting Di2 6870 Ultegra 2014. Very interested to hear the various trails, tribulations (good n bad experiences) from others who have Di2.

If you have any useful tips and information with the above please feel free to share

My first experience (Compact 50/34 and 11-25 cassette) has been so so.... Have only done 54 km's with it so far but from the onset found the gear shifting a bit iffy (basically crap) when shifting from 25 to 23 to 21 to 19 it either does not shift or jumps 2 sprockets. Shifts from the 19 -> 11 are ok. This only happens when it is on the 54 chain ring. Shifting is perfect when on the small chain ring.

As its new I'm taking it back to the LBS to adjust, but looking at the shimano manual it looks like "adjusting / fine tuning" electronic gears is going to be require some study and learning for future adjustments if required

Jeez, i thought it was 'set & forget' from chatting to same guys who have it. Having said that I did see a guy starting in front of me @ the Paarl race last year and the rear mech shifting up and down on it's own and sounded like a machine gun! He looked pretty filthy about it.

i had a scott foil 15 for a while.

equipped with ultegra di2 10 speed.

i found the bike to be rubbish - way to harsh

however the gearing was sweet, change happened fast, it never jumped with me and fine tuning is incredibly easy once you know how.

i currently ride campagnolo record ultra 10 speed.

and i will happily give that up to get back onto the ultegra di2

Having some experience with electrical systems, wiring, motors etc I'm a bit concerned about the concept over the long term, BUT ja I was also under the impression that when new and IF its set up correctly it works very well.

I have not had the opportunity to study manual properly how to "tune it" and as I have one or 2 other issues that the LBS should sort out on the bike I'll leave it to them.

Fine tuning? Can you expand on this, for example do you mean adjusting the shifting as in the "work shop / garage / work stand" mode or while riding...and roughly what you did?

i never tried it on the bike. but i am sure this can be done.

i cant remember entirely, so forgive me if it doesnt work

hold down the button on the controller that will be located somewhere near your bars. (its the small square box)

when the light turns red you have now entered setup mode.

by pushing the lever buttons on the Sti's in this mode you will be able to shift the derailleurs very very slightly up or down.

once you have finished setting where you want the derailleur simply push and hold the button on the small box again.

and boom you are done

these are rudimentary instructions, and are as best i can remember...

i apologise if they are incorrect

hope this helps

Thanks, yep it sounds simple enough

Like I said it shifts smoothly and properly when on the small chain ring, if it does the same when on the big chain ring then I'd be very happy.

as described by Furbz above is 100% correct. First do this in the 3rd smallest gear (as per Shimano manual) and then do small adjustments in other gears if required. I don't know how I've ridden with manual now that I am used to DI2

Derailleur position for each sprocket can be fine tuned. You can also set te deraiieur to index perfectly with a Campy or Sram cassette. Once set, shifting will never go out.

once it is setup right you will be smiling all the way!

Sounds like the LBS did a poor job on the set up.

I don't quite understand why on the small chain ring its perfect but not on the big chain ring when shifting up on the first 4 cassette sprockets? I realize the chain could have an effect especially on the first (25T) but surely not on the 21 and 19?

Does the set procedure advise using both front chain rings or just one (the big one)?
