Both my 4yr old and 10yr old ride an easy 15km twice a weekend. We let them compete in the www.like2bike.co.za series every 2 months. This is children only to the age of 14. No times every one gets a medal which is all they want!

The 10 yr loves to race and is aware that she is out to beat only her self and the clock. But her vision (not ours) is to ride like Cherise Stander in years to come.

She has completed the Emperors 20, lido 35 all in her own time. She respects all the other riders and knows the rules and regulations on what to do the trail.

No pressure from us as we are backmarkers ourselves and want them to develop at there own pace.

Would like to get more info on this.

it seems to be different in the provinces.

Spur series includes all age categories.. I know it's in kzn.. and I think it's in cape town.. In fact.. I think it's all provinces?

Investigate the possibility of BMX racing in your area. It is absolutely brilliant for teaching them skills that will later be invaluable in whatever other branch of cycling they go into. It is short, so you don't get the over-use injuries and skeletal development problems that are associated with long hours on the bike in young growing children. They have age categories from very young and they are intensely competitive. (In a healthy way)

Longer distances and long term training should really only start from about 14 years old. Training and racing the occasional race a few times a year will not be a problem, but cycling should not be their main sport from so young. Try make riding as much fun as you can, that way they will love it for life, not just enjoy it when they win.

My 2c (only because I've been there and done that, not because I'm a geologist)
