Is the app only compatible with certain trainers?

Not an expert yet, but will see when I get mine during this week. I suppose you will have to use a trainer which a. measures power, and b. connects with either ANT+ or Bluetooth to the device your your app functions on.

Ok sweetness.

Top end dedicated indoor cycles...Dom Perignon budget....You need a dedicated room for this cause the trainers are bulky, not that easy to move around and dedicated to one thing...training. Two options here....Wattbike / Cyclops 420. These are state of the art machines with all the bells and whistles. They don't neccesarily give any more functionality than top end ergo IDT's, they just make it easier from a setup / get up and go point of view.

Top end IDT / ergo trainers...You don't need a dedicated room for this option since they are easy to move around. They do require a bike locked into it. They offer powerbased HIT training with the trainer's resistance automatically adjusting / Virtual races...very nice and quite a bit of fun racing against virtual partners / online people around the world / Virtual routes...create a virtual route in google earth or download previous ride into software or ride a famous route with video that speeds up or slows down as you are riding. There are only two options here....Wahoo kickr and Cylops Powerbeam Pro. They both excellent trainers that don't lock you into any software(analysis and operating) so they stick to what they do best...indoor trainers, they don't try and be a software house over and above. Proper local backup with the cyclops sealed the deal for me, the kickr however does support both Ant and Bluetooth which is a huge plus.

Middle of the road budget turbo trainers....This is a bit of no man's land ito functionality and price, There is only one in this bracket and its the Kurt Kinetic road machine. Very good build quality and guaranteed to never loose fluid due to its design. Also with the inride add-on that you can purchase later on, you can do powerbased training for quite a bit less than the top end trainers. It also allows great interfacing into Trainerroad and Virtual training. There is also the Bkool trainer which seems very good and packs some great functionality, but due to the lack of backup I wouldn't consider it at the moment.

Bottom of the pile...Rollers will be my option here, it is stimulating and although it will be hard to hit certain training zones(due to lack of resistance settings) will still give you a descent workout. They are also very mobile in the sense that you can take them anywhere anytime and get a nice spin, they are also much cheaper that IDT's

Lots and lots of manna to you, Vriend. You saved me a lot of time and possibly money by pointing to the right direction. You ever down in CT remember I owe you a good bottle of wine - or beer if you insist.

Hi guys, sorry to jump in with my first post, but once you have one of these trainers, is there any website out there that has a range of sessions to do on the trainer to keep things interesting?

CycleOps Virtual Training or Trainer Road are some of your better software out on the market that will allow most trainers to be sync'ed up.

Thanks for the prices, gives a some specifics to the discussion. Are the extras on the powerbeam related to software for the VR or does it refer to things like HR etc? I thinking of using my 29" with it ... And need to know what I must open the discussions with the finance minister with :-(

The CycleOps PowerBeam Pro includes the following

ANT or BLE Trainer

ANT or BLE cadence sensors

ANT HR Strap* only included on the ANT+ PowerBeam

ANT USB stick * only included on the ANT+ PowerBeam

one would need to download CycleOps Virtual Training application for free and subs start from US $6/mth for tablet and US $12/mth for PC

PowerBeam Pro will work on 29" MTB wheels and will also work on selected 142mm through axles, additional axle kit will need to be purchased at R995

routes are then free to download under an active sub.

No probs meneer....will take you up on the beer offer

Downloaded the latest virtual training app on Friday....awesome stuff. One has to just go through this thread to realize which brand of trainer will come to the party when the chips are down so to speak. Powerbeam ftw

I just bought the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine 2.0 and inRide bundle (HR strap and powermeter pod) with courier from JHB to CT for R7600. Add R1000 per year for TrainerRoad and you have a high quality fluid trainer with accurate power readings and the ability to link to media for videos etc.

It is not the Kickr where you don't have to change wheels and get a direct powermeter included, but hey, it's eight grand lighter...and weight is important in cycling, no?

Also an awesome unit...enjoy

I say buy the cheapest one you can find. You don't want to spend a ton of cash on something you hate so much the thought of it makes you vomit in your mouth a little...

Can't disagree more...its actually for this very reason that you will hate it. The cheapy trainers are mind numbing, since they don't do anything except provide resistance to your stationary bike. That is like throwing money down the toilet...rather spend more and get something that will last longer, have good backup and provide stimulation whilst training in the form of

Live HR / Cadence / Power / Speed Data

HIT programming with live ergo resistance

Sufferfest integration

Online races / Route record challenges.

Virtual routes with or without video

Whilst not everything I listed might be your cup of tea, some of provides for awesome training stimulation....dare I say it might even be fun.

i concur with all here. i have had a certain trainer make starting with " E " and a mag turbo trainer ( all top notch goods ) for a few while.

replaced the " E " with the power beam pro. my wife which is only cycling for three years immediately picked up the difference between the power beam and the rest of the trainers

.

guess which one she enjoys more
