Day 1 was a living nightmare for me. The clay/mud and pineneedles got so bad, I put the bike on my back and walked for over 5 km. There was no other way. Rolling it on the ground for THREE meters, resulted in well over 5kilgorams of clay accumulatig on all the deraileurs and tyres and both wheels LOCKING. The clearance of the front shock cross tie and tyre was half a cm, terribly small and thus I was hardest hit by anyone in the field. This was insanity. Anyway finished the race by trekking with bike on my back the whole way through basically.

What an awesome ride in some of the most picturesque parts of good old South Africa. Seriaaaasly nice weather, beautiful indigenous forrests, good climbs and unforgetable vibe. Bike and components took everything in its stride.......pity about the pilot. Thanks Sabie for a top notch event.

PS: Note to self - train more, loose weight and use more sunscreen.

I agree, although on the Solo X they took us to a new high for me, 2150m above sea level and the view was unbelievable. I actually stopped to take some pichas which I'll post when I am home at the end of the week. There is the small matter of a 60k ride tomorrow to be finished first!

I must say there is a big part of me not so keen on tomorrow ,today was a killer for me. And bought another plot in the forest about 4 km from the Finnish line.

Some great riding out here.

This is turning in to an expensive race for me , one of my crashes yesterday bust open my brake resavor , yesterday it all worked well but on my way to the start line boom no front brakes so quick shopping trip to Valencia at the start line for new XT brakes.

Ran true and straight. Bikes were exposed to everthing imaginable in MTB......except.being completely submerged in water.......but that option was also a possibilty with the +100m floating bridge on day 1. Mud, BIG drop-offs, all types of track and even railway track........SWAMBO's bike and mine performed great with NO mechanical problems. BIG THUMBS UP TO SUMMIT CYCLES AND ITS OWNER.........thanks Sheriff.

Almost had a similar experience on that section.........that green moss type growth on the single track, combined with some tree roots just forcing a steering line.........lets just say I almost did an instant vasectomy on myself. Saved it by uncleating and dropping the foot to the ground dirt bike style.

Good luck for tomorrow.........I am relaxing with a recovery drink.........huge chocolate milkshake.

From yesterday's no clouds "son-gooi-klippe" instant cycle tan to today's pouring rain......Sabie had very unpredictable weather the last few days (85mm of rain through the night). Ride and shower day today.......bikes will however be taking a pounding.

That was wet, muddy and cold. Organizers were contemplating canceling the stage when heavens opened out on the course and the alternate route got washed away. Lots of stress for them but in the end it seems all ended well. This is the first time since I started Mountain Biking that I did not look forward to the descents, it was treacherous, fortunately I kept the rubber side down for all four days!
