I got myself an Edge 510, I got a speed sensor included so my question is why? Its actually a speed and cadence sensor. But why is there a speed sensor as well? Is it for when the satellite coverage is bad?

And if I do attach the speed sensor to my bike what does the Unit use to measure distance and speed, gps and speed sensor or just speed sensor.

If I dont want to use the cadence function do I even need to attach the speed sensor, I know I dont have to but what do you hubbers recommend? Will it increase the accuracy of the speed and distance measurement?

Thanks

the magnetic speed sensor is ever so slightly more accurate(based on tyre circumference)....if you pair the 510 with the speed sensor, it will use that....if you remove the sensor it will use GPS calculation. If you want to use the speed sensor and be absolutely sure your distance is perfect then its best measure the circum every so often and input into the 510 under bike settings

The admin of the speed sensor isn't worth the accuracy....I like fit and forget things...adding more complication to the system for 0.01 accuracy improvement isn't worth it

Do you use the cadence sensor at all?

Does it help?

My bad, what Rouxtjie says

No mnr, you are also right....they include it if you want to track speed on IDT's and rollers as well...it will also work outdoors obviously

I also like to fit and forget, so I think I will see how it goes without the sensor for the first few rides.

Thanks

It also has the ability to "Auto Calibrate" the wheel circumference which is the easy way out that I took. I to a fair amount of IDT so (even though it is fairly theoretical) I like to measure speed/Distance as well as Power and Cadence when doing trainer sessions.

Trust me, you will never put it on....its just not worth the hassle, and of course the extra 10grams

ah must be new functionality in the 510...in the 500 you still have to put the circum in manually

Cadence is a very important training and performance metric!

Yes that is new in the 510.

I would suggest it's only useful if you use an indoor trainer or are concerned with cadence (training program that actually uses that), besides it being interesting I think there are few using this anyway (just IMHO)

I have also found the sensors fragile and suspect to malfunction, whether due to dirt/water ingress I am not sure so not really ideal on an MTB.
