Shebeen Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 here's my spanner in the works. The equal prize money for the ladies is not really generating much bang for buck. Hasn't attracted many elite teams and 'appears' to be already a foregone conclusion. maybe i'm wrong, but going by the official twitter feed they're seemingly ignored there too
nathrix Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 I thought Bridge was up a creek without a paddle? http://www.capepioneer.co.za/component/content/article/83-main-menu/news/123-prize-money-quality-confirmed-for-2014-bridge-cape-pioneer-trek?Itemid=435 PRIZE MONEY, QUALITY CONFIRMED FOR 2014 BRIDGE CAPE PIONEER TREK The significant prize money purse as well as the high quality race environment at the 2014 Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek will be unaffected despite the recent decision by Bridge, the event’s title sponsor, to apply for business rescue, according to Race Director, Henco Rademeyer of Dryland Event Management, the company that owns and organises the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek. The sixth edition of the seven-day international mountain bike stage race in South Africa’s Western Cape province has attracted a strong field, which includes a number of current and former national, continental and world champions and a total of over 400 riders from 15 countries. Bridge, a provider of short-term unsecured credit, decided in early September to apply for business rescue as a result of, among of factors, the rapid deterioration of confidence in the unsecured lending industry following the placing of a major player into curatorship. The business rescue process allows for a legal framework to restructure Bridge to enable it to continue as a sustainable business. “We have been in contact with all our sponsors over the past two weeks and I can confirm that the 2014 edition of the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek will not be affected on any level and will go ahead as planned with all the relevant rider benefits and prize money,” said Rademeyer on Monday. “The decision by Bridge to honour its commitment to the race in particular and mountain biking in general is to be respected and appreciated. “We have a very committed group of sponsors who work with us closely to ensure our events continuously deliver the highest standards. Besides Bridge, our title sponsor, Klein Karoo International, Fairview, Wilde Juice, Cape Brewing Co, 32GI and Giant bicycles are all headline and partner sponsors at the Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek. “Another important aspect of the Bridge sponsorship of the Cape Pioneer Trek is that they have allowed us to retain our tone as an event that’s challenging, but sympathetic. We do our best to make every participant – be they a world champion or a weekend warrior – feel like an important part of the event. It’s one of the reasons we get so many returning participants each year,” added Rademeyer. Since 2012 when it took on the Cape Pioneer Trek in a five-year sponsorship agreement, Bridge has given the event a significant boost, particularly in the prize money department, which has helped the race secure International Cycling Union (UCI) grading status. Bridge has also been responsible for increasing the women’s category prize money at the Cape Pioneer Trek so that it is equivalent to what the men earn. The total prize money for all categories for the 2014 event is over R450 000 (approximately US$45 000). The 2014 Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek will be held from 12-18 October 2014.
Shebeen Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Okay then the rules not up to date! Ignore the post above, or maybe it's a guideline.announced just after last year's race. R125k each! The 2014 Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek international mountain bike stage race has been given a fresh boost following the announcement that Bridge, the title sponsor, has significantly increased the prize money for the race’s Swartberg Pass stage with its iconic mountain-top finish. The 2013 edition of the seven-day race finished in Oudtshoorn in South Africa’s Western Cape province on Saturday and Neels Grobler, Chief Growth Officer at Bridge, announced that the third year of the company’s involvement would see increased focus on the women’s category, starting with equal prize money on the event’s queen stage. This year, the first men’s team to the summit of the Swartberg Pass, Asrin Cycling’s James Reid (RSA) and Jens Schuermans (BEL) collected R112 000 (US $12 000). The first women’s team earned R25 000 (US $2 500). The women’s prize money this year was donated by Khombisa Media. For 2014, the event’s first year as a UCI-graded stage race, Bridge has increased the Swartberg Pass stage prize money to R125 000 for the first men’s team and R125 000 for the first women’s team. “The top women make just as much sacrifice and show just as much commitment as the men. They deserve the same reward,” said Grobler. “At Bridge, we’re not just a sponsor, we’re a partner to the Cape Pioneer Trek and we want to make a meaningful contribution to the success of the event. Increasing the prize money for the race’s biggest stage is a good place to start.” Among the women’s field this year was two-time marathon world champion, Annika Langvad, who is also the current Danish national marathon champion. She partnered with current Swiss marathon champion, Arianne Kleinhans in the RE:CM Davinci team, which won the women’s title in dominant fashion. Their main rivals were Britain’s Jane Nuessli and Switzerland’s former marathon world champion, Esther Suss. Other women in the race were former South African marathon champions, Yolande Speedy and Cherise Stander, current South African marathon champion, Robyn de Groot and current Swedish marathon champion, Jennie Stenerhag. “We had a strong, but small women’s field in the race this year. With UCI points on offer next year and this big prize money boost from Bridge, we are expecting similar high quality riders, but a lot more depth in the women’s race in 2014,” said Henco Rademeyer of Dryland Event Management. “This is really great news! It’s a huge step towards equality in a sport that has been dominated by men for so many years,” said 2013 women’s champion, Ariane Kleinhans. “I take it somehow as a reward for all us ladies that put a huge amount of effort into the sport and push ourselves to the absolute limit. But it should also act as motivation for me and all the other ladies to live up to the expectations and grow in our numbers as well as our performance,” added Kleinhans. The R250 000 total prize money for the two winning teams (male and female) on the Swartberg Pass stage is the biggest cash prize for any mountain bike race stage in the world. “It’s rare to have a mountain-top finish in a mountain bike race because of the logistical challenge involved, especially in a remote area like the Swartberg Mountains. But Bridge and our other sponsors have embraced this challenge and have helped us make it into a special feature of the Cape Pioneer Trek,” said Carel Herhold of Dryland Event Management. The 2013 Bridge Cape Pioneer Trek – the fifth edition – attracted 400 entrants who tackled a total distance of over 500 kilometres with more than 11 500 metres of vertical ascent over seven days. A total of 20% of the field was from outside South Africa, with 13 countries represented, including the host nation.
