Essentially wider tyres on wider rims. Impact on frame design since clearance an issue.

 

Good idea or not?

 

I have been running 2.4" high volume tyres on a HT 26" bike. The result is something very close to a 650b size.

 

Issues are:

 

It requires a rim with a wide internal rim width to prevent burping, or alternatively higher pressures (which negates the advantages of a high-volume tyre).

Great idea for fully rigid bikes.

There is also no need to use the wider rims, I am running a 3.0 tyre on a standard 29'er rim.

Also if you running 1x10 you will struggle more on a bigger tire. Maybe not much but it will be noticeable.

The 29+ Surly Knard and Dirt Wizard are both 3.0

Also if you running 1x10 you will struggle more on a bigger tire. Maybe not much but it will be noticeable.

 

I had no issue up the hills this past weekend and my bike is set up as 1X10 with a 34 front blade and 11/36

Volume of 2.25 racing Ralph's are perfect for our conditions.

 

Would like something fat on a rigid though.

I have the Surly Knard on.

All sorts of terrain, I like what it does in deep thick sand and I love the additional bump absorption on the rigid fork.

I am only running the 3.0 up front and a 2.4 at the rear.

It does make me feel like I can ride over more stuff wit less care or worry.

Weight wise they are not that bad

 

The 120tpi version of the Dirt Wizard 26+ (airs up to same outer diameter as a decent 650B) comes in at 850g

 

I've had "normal" 26" rubber that weighs more

LOL, not quite but I must say the tyre is quite light and turns pretty quick.
