Best MTB pedal

I've been using Eggbeater SL's since i purchased my Santa Cruz (15 months) and am now only going to rebuild them. Obviously the anodizing on the actual spring has taken a bit of a beating but in my opinion, a brilliant pedal.

Shamus, were can I get some blue anodized replacement springs ?

I started off with a set of noname SPD type pedals that were really rubbish. Then I bit the bullet and bought eggbeaters. They did eat away at the sho sole but the bigger problem was that the springs was eating away on the loops where they meet and a lot of play developed within a year. They were way to expencive for replacing regularly so I switched to SPD 520. At R300 per set I could live with replacing them once a year when the spindle was worn away. I have now bought a set of 540s for the epic.

So: Eggbeaters - brilliant design, works well, not durable enough for the price

spd 520 - have been happy with them once the tension is set up correctly. no serious mud problems

spd 540 - the jury is out.

I've used Time, SHimano and Eggbeater and I'd rate them as follows

Mechanical reliability:

1) Shimano SPD PD 520/540/770/970

2) Time Atac

3) Eggbeater

Weight:(lack off)

1) Eggbeater

2) Time ATAC Carbon

3) Shimano

Mud Clearance: I used these in Europe

1) Eggbeater

3) Shimano/Time

User friendliness and agent back up in SA

1) Shimano

2) Eggbeater

3) Time

Overall:

1) Shimano

2) Time

3) Eggbeater

I found the eggbeater to be unreliable. Bearings often broke without warning leaving the pedal body free of the axle. Could have been a nasty accident. After teh thrid bearing failure I binned them. Will Never ever buy those pedals again.

Time was fantastic, overall my favourite pedal but backupin SA is pathetic. They fdont; bring in any spares. If you break a spring you have to buy a new pedal. In europe that is stockable spare part! Thanks J&J for your lack of assitance.

For me the most sensible pedal purchase Would be Shimano. It give litle away to the others in the mud and adjustability. You really can fine tune to the way you like. The back up is excellent but seldom needed. They are bulletproof pedals.

I'm keen on trying the LOOK Quartz. Very similar design to the original A.T.A.C.

and their weight or lack off is attractive plus they available from the same distributor

I also thought that the Looks are quite similar to the original  Time A.T.A.C pedals. A friend of mine still had a set many years ago... think they were yellow and red.

i love my eggbeaters, once i'm clipped in - yep, i'm just figuring out the different "way" of clipping in to my old spd's - because i'd had those set very loose to be able to clip out quickly. just one thing KF forgot to mention is that once we'd sorted the derailleur out and the chain wasn't jumping i stopped sukkeling to clip in Wink so i suspect the big issues were more trying to deal with a chain slipping itself stupid and not actually moving the bike forward as required!

Here's my take on the negatives of the various pedals I've tried:

Time (currently using them and have been my main pedal)

    Poor SA service

The change to the flat springs was a mistake - not as durable as the old round ones (but they've changed back on the Roc's - just not sure one 'needs' the bigger platform)

Eggbeaters

The platform is too small for me.

    Poor durability (though rebuildable).

Can unclip if you hit a rock with the bottom of the pedal (enough to put me off ever using them)

    Spindle too long.

Candy SL

Kind of negates much of the plusses of the eggbeaters but without ridding of the negatives. Not for me.

Shimano

At the time I didn't like the mud clearance and difficult engagement, but I think that's been sorted and the M970's get great reviews.

I've also tried flatties, Time Z pedals (still use them on my SS), Ritchey's..

I'm going to try the Looks next instead of a new set of Times or the Shimano's - hope I don't regret it, but they look promising.

Thanks for the correction, was under impression LOOK was still with Coolheat. Good lcuk with the agency.

Hmm 22Nd MArch is rather too late for the Cape Epic but in time for Rest of MTB Season.

Would love a set to try out and report back. Have not had much luck with Ti axled pedals so the Carbons would be the way to go and they're light enough.

So if you could (nudge nudge) have a set available for the Epic I would be happy to review them for you and distribute. I am very objective.

Eggbeaters -
    Spindle too long.

#Pete#

Shorter Axles are available' date=' but are not standard

the local supplier has got stock of both Ti and steel upgrade axles

Doesn;t change the fact that the bearing life can be measured in hours  :(

But great that you have all the parts available. I commend you on that! Well doneClap

If only other suppliers would do the same
