I didn't say that I personally took it literally.

But Wyatt certainly did "will be sitting back and smiling when the rope you have chokes you around the neck"

Can only assume he's referring to (a) not (b) when he went into such graphic detail.

It goes like this, "give a man a enough rope and he will hang himself"

It's what they call an "idiom"

How are cup & cone bearings under 'pressure'? If you are applying enough preload to apply pressure to the bearings I'm afraid you're going to cause those bearings, along with the cup & cone to wear prematurely. The cone should not apply any pressure to the bearings. It should simply be advanced far enough that there is no play between the bearings & the cone.

What's the feeling on the CK bearings that are also low speed bearings? Since they fall into the same boat as the normal bicycle sealed bearings which don't spin fast enough to generate 'pressure'? Should be serviced? Don't touch them ever?

sigh

Wow the googlelator has arrived... :whistling:

Preload = pressure. No one mentioned overtightening

speed = heat = expansion = pressure (see above)

high speed bearings or sealed bearings as they commonly known exihibit more wear in bicycle use bcause they never get up to temperature so there is always play. This play creats uneven wear paths in the bearing. Applying more grease because the intelligent people who designed and built the bearings is a bad idea because more grease and oil absorbs more heat so the bearing runs cooler.

CK bearings are preloaded

What would you know? You and Peach and Patches are only qualified engineers with a lot of experience servicing your bikes backed by documentation from the manufacturers that supports what you're saying as well as articles from reputable bike websites.

But that's none of my business.

Welcome back Rata, Whata or which one you are this time.

So the rest of us are stupid with no engineering background and have never serviced bikes before.

As for some of the documentation, it's as reputable as your profile.

I've yet to see anything to back up the claims made by the others. I even tried to Google "don't regrease bearings" and got nothing.

Anyways each to there own I guess. I guess all the contributors have their own minds made up, so it'll be up to those reading the thread to make their own mind up.

And they can be damn grateful for guys like Golefty and myself for giving them a reason to doubt.

If you are reading this (whoever you are) it's my pleasure.

At least your ego doesn't need any greasing.

Just imagine a guy googles bearing regreasing and he comes upon this thread with 2 internet nobodies called Wyatt Earp and Golefty shouting the odds, both back slapping each other claiming amazing bearing knowledge but the one doesn't even know what 2RS means or how to service his own headset and still thinks a rubber seal is made with plastic.

Hahahahaha
