A friend spoke to the organizers last week and was told it's definitely on as planned.

I am still not convinced about the tarred-section-to-be, it is much more than a km and this sort of work costs! Secondly had a look at the bike route, that section turning into the R563 and then onto the road to Hartebeeshoek Satellite station is very busy with taxis hurtling down there.

Let's hope the organisers can pull it off.

Will be full road closure... No need to worry about taxis and on a sunday I reckon there should be no real worries anyway.

Road works commenced and should be finished...its a short stretch only.

I hope this is a huge success as its in my interests that we have a viable half distance event on my doorstep so to speak.

I agree with you. If this event is a success I think it will draw huge crowds in the future. It is a tough route and ideally timed for those pushing on for Full IM.

I just dont understand why TriRock is so coy about the update on the road. I get the feeling it is a mad scramble to get SOMETHING done. Cant see how they can tar that whole road in time personally....

I cycled past Heia on Friday last week, an there was much activity and bulldozers and other heavy machinery hard at work. ITs a short stretch, I think its doable. Will be cycling passed Heia again on Saturday and will check for progress.... For the Durban Trirock event there was a section of around 4km's on the M4 that had not been tarred until about 10 days before the event ..I think it was chronicled on the hub too.

Worst case scenario , make the transition area at the top of Heia by the gate , means a short run from dam to gate an I would be happy to port my bike to beyers naude and take the time needed. But I believe na hope it will be sorted anyway.

Am sure the event will be a go ...hope so I need the training for IM.

From the dam all the way to the exit of Heia must be AT LEAST 1km... From the run route profile I would guess its closer to 1.5km

Running from the dam after the swim to the exit is just way too far... Also I hear you with regard to the untarred section in Durban and that coming off, but that was a roads agency project?

Anyway, I am with you in that I hope its a success and that the road is tarred... I just dont think this is their actual plan.

Let me know how the scouting mission goes!

I also don't think that it's in their plans to tar the road. I reckon they'll just compact it and make it smooth enough to be ridden on.

If this is the case, then hopefully there won't be a whole lot of rain in the days leading up to the event..

This was their update on FB this morning:

Work on the road surface continues HERO Adventure Park, at Heia Safariand will be complete for TRIROCK Cradle. This images shows the safe, smooth surface which will be achieved once the work is complete.

Agreed - I personally thought they said it would be tarred. I guess compact hard sand COULD be ok... but it is quite risky...

Rain and then its a stuff up

i was also under the impression that it would be tarred.  Not sure why....but can for some or other reason remember that it was a comment that was made.

Ah well, lets just hope that it is going to be safe to ride on....else there will be some seriously  p!ssed off athletes!

Another thing that gets to me is the fact that there is basically no information on the event in the athletes guide....and it is 2 weeks before the event

Yip how hard is it to post the cycle route road elevation???

I really hope they pull this off... I have my doubts

Not even speaking about road elevation.

Things like race briefing, bike check in times.  Do we check in on race morning or is it happening saturday?  This has an impact on people that travel to the race.

Well, hope that they can pull it off.  Only using it as training for IM, but still need a well organised event for the money we paid

"The hosting this event will be an achievement in itself, but in addition a tar road has been authorized to facilitate this event and is currently under construction. The road will allow the athletes access from the site of their 1,9km swim, to the surrounding roads to complete their 90km cycle leg. Full road closures will ensure that the roads will be free from traffic to ensure the safety of all competitors."

I thought i read it somewhere.

Seems like we will not be getting what they promised.  I was always under the impression that it would be tarred.

Ah well, lets hope for the best
