MK Killer Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Not even speaking about road elevation. Things like race briefing, bike check in times. Do we check in on race morning or is it happening saturday? This has an impact on people that travel to the race. Well, hope that they can pull it off. Only using it as training for IM, but still need a well organised event for the money we paid Ah good point! Given that this is on my doorstep I hadn't thought about those things yet - but obviously vital
Nancy Drew Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Yip how hard is it to post the cycle route road elevation??? I really hope they pull this off... I have my doubts I did a recce of the ride on my MTB, so I'll go find and post the elevation. Unfortunately it was from the main gate, so doesn't include the climb from T1 up to the road... and that is a killer of a climb. Then again, you can see that elevation from the running profile
Nancy Drew Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 There we go The bike leg EXCLUDING the +-1km climb from T1 to the main road
MK Killer Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 There we go The bike leg EXCLUDING the +-1km climb from T1 to the main road Hi Nancy, I have cycled out to as far the caves normally (which is about 25km into the route I guess. Once you turn right at that T junction how tough is the ride? Looks pretty daunting from the route profile

Looks pretty daunting from the route profile Hi MK, when you turn right onto the R563, after you've gone past the Go Kart track, there is a killer climb which must be roughly 4kms long. Once you get to the top though it's downhill until the Broederstroom turnoff. When you take the turnoff towards the satellite tracking station, it's an undulating road (similar to in the Cradle) and then one horrible little climb which can't be more than a kilometre. Obviously on the return, all the downhills become uphills and vice versa, so at least there'll be a bit of relief on the R563 return journey before hitting the Cradle again

The run leg will also have a fair amout of climb from what I can ascertain...the issue is that the entrance to Heia is the lowest point in that area, so you only ever going to be climbing no matter what from the start. This tri is not going to be easy, throw in a hot day , maybe high humidity due to all the rain and we going to suffer nicely....but all good training and a stepping stone to the big daddy. Finishing this event feeling relatively good and in a decentish time will be good indication for 29 march....which is only 58 days away.....
MK Killer Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Ok so on Tri Rocks facebook page they have confirmed the road will not be tarred and that they NEVER promised it would be... They have promised a smooth surface to the exit... All I care about is getting to the exit on smooth surface and not slogging away on bumpy uphill worrying about punctures... I leave it in their "capable" hands

Have to say that yesterday during the Berg an Dal race there were loads of guys with punctures and that was all on tar...so no guarantees I guess.

I wonder what the turn out for this race is going to be? Theoretically I would expect a large field
IceCreamMan Posted February 2, 2015 Author Posted February 2, 2015 I wonder what the turn out for this race is going to be? Theoretically I would expect a large fieldwell, they had 300 early bird slots which sold out ...so I guess minimum 300 .... the first tri rock in Durban had about 450 , the next one over 900.... I hope a largish field and looking at the number of waves it looks like it certainly could be. we will find out next weekend
bigjoe Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Just a question. The guys that are doing Tri rock and IMSA. Which of the following strategies are you following?1. Tapering for Tri rock and racing the event2. Normal training but easy sessions the week leading up to the event....and then using it as a training session to get the distance in? I am thinking that I am not going to taper like i normally do before a long event.....as IM is the main goal for the season. This might mean a bit more suffering on Sunday as my legs wont be that well rested.

This might mean a bit more suffering on Sunday as my legs wont be that well rested. If the focus is on IM, normal training and then use the race on sunday to make up your usual weekend distance. So, if you would otherwise ride 150km / run 21km on the weekend, do a Saturday ride of 60-70km and the race on Sunday... The fatigue in the legs will also force you to go slower and not "race", thereby limiting the damage you can do by going too hard. Just have to view it as a really tough training session. Have a good day or 2's recovery, start over.

I may just ride with the ol Gatorskins tho and not my thin race tires
