Lucky enough to have never had one. Here's my question though; let's say you get a saddle sore in the middle of a stage race. Would above mentioned advice get you back on a bike riding the next day? I've read that if it breaks skin you are done for.

Look meneer, you will be singing like a canary before the skin breaks...its sore as in not uncomfortable, more like I cannot sit cause it feels like a cactus. Once it gets to this stage(normally around day 4-5) GO to the medical tent, dont be hardegat(excuse the pun). They will treat the sore and dress it to prevent the skin breaking. In my case with friars balsam and wolkombers plaster. From this point on, it will be moer uncomfrtable, but you will be able to sit now and again giving your legs a break.

The advice the doc gave me was....prevention is better than cure. Condition your rear by doing the following

1.Spending time in the saddle if you doing a big stage race

2.Get the right saddle and fit...and don't change or fiddle with this before the race

3.Apply SS or friars on the sitbone area whilst you are still in the training phase...this will make the area tough and hard.

Zambuck works for me

zambuck = betadine = pulls like a mofo when you apply it liberally, but otherwise its good too. bactroban and fucidin are anti-bacterial which is good for "that area", but you may want to make sure you aren't allergic to the inactive ingredients in bactroban. Betadine is somewhat sore to apply, but its also very effective. Unfortunately its sticky and messy and stains, so you'll need a plaster over. Put one of those square white muscle-voltaren like patches over the plaster and you should be good in no time =D
