Hi,

I am about to start mountain biking and would like to get into short weekend events, around 40 - 50km, and general trail riding.

My budget is around R10000 to begin with until I'm sure I'll stick to it.

Any recommendations on what to buy or what I should look out for?

Thanks

Get the best fork and RD your money can afford. Having something that soaks up the bumps well, and a good shifting system make or break a ride in my opinion.

Word of advice - for your budget, you're going to come across a lot of bikes with coil sprung SR Suntour forks. Avoid these at all cost!

Try and push for an entry level RockShox. A poor performing fork can ruin you over 50+km over rough terrain.

Thanks for all the advice so far.  Will look out for a decent fork.

Any brand of bike I should look at or avoid?  Are the local bikes just as good?

Local bikes are just as good. You can't really buy a bad bike nowadays- just a heavy one with a not so great fork. All the frames are pretty much the same. Asking what brand is best is like asking which brand of car is the best- we all have our favourites.

Agreed, I started on a coil fork and upgraded my bike and now have Air and XT derailleurs, it makes the world of difference. Enjoying my riding so much more now. Also to start look second hand, with R10k you should be able to pickup something decent. The local brands aren't bad in my opinion/ experience. Get something that will fit you as well, will make a difference and factor in pump, bottles, spare tubes, minitool, cleats and shoes if you don't already have.

That GT Zaskar is the same one I ride- a bargain at that price!

It seems like the 29er is the way to go (listening to people around me).  Pros and cons of that?  I've heard it's more forgiving on trails but is it necessary?

It will help you on the technical stuff in my opinion.

If you don't come right, then give Avron a call.

He has a good reputation in Cape Town.

I bought my bike from him with your budget and i am very happy.( Full carbon, Deore groupset,Mavic wheels, etc. )

Avron: 0834002068 or 0214480812

I am sure that he can set you up with some nice wheels.
