should they legalise performance enhancing drugs?

Trackies are no more susceptible to drugs than roadies or MTB riders.
Its different drugs that they may use...but they all still use.
In fact' date=' I'm pretty confident there have been more road riders caught for use than track riders. But I may be wrong...its happened before.

I agree its wrong to dope. Its in contravention to the rules.
But I pose you this question...
If I could give you a drug that would guarantee you the ability to win the Tour De France and not be in any danger of being caught, would you take that drug??

I would.[/quote']

I wouldn't

Good question tho....

The way I look at it is like this...

If you could take the drug (illegal) you would have to keep it a secret from all the people close to you (wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, parents, dog, you get the idea?)

So how would you feel if they (the wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, parents, dog) found out??

Pretty sh*t huh???

Well remember that feeling when you make the decison, perhaps it will help to make the right one.

Look, I do not for one second think that doping is correct. I'm not an idiot.

But there is absolutely no way of stopping it now.

WADA and the like are spending vast sums of money on testing. But the guys using are way smarter.

SwissVan, I agree with what your saying. But it remains a hypothetical question. Just like this one, who would win the Tour if everybody rode clean?

In my opinion...the exact same guy that would have won it doped. I reckon the playing fields are already level...we just dont dare admit it.

I just looked up doping on wikipedia. It's amazing to read how long this has been going on for, and certainly not just cycling. It's worth reading.

There are so many sports involved in doping.

But cycling has become the poster child of doping.

But cheating takes on all forms...when Chunky went to the World champs in 1992, a young female rider 'failed' the femininity test!!! (he had nothing to do with that by the way!!)

People will go to any length possible to win. Sadly its in our nature to be competitive.

I'm just glad we dont have to still compete naked in the Olympics!!

One of the first drugs used for cycling was "Pot Belge", a mixture of amphetemines, cocaine, heroin and caffeine. It was first used decades ago and is apparently still in use today.

Let me 1st say probably the most abused items for increased performance are energy drinks / gels. I still use Ice tea found at Pick 'n Pay! Still did 2h54 in ACT this year with a puncture form A group!

At a professional level it may as well be free for all. But I would suggest then that riders riding in the Olympics must not be pro's and drug free! This is how it was in the 80's

Always remember the test will be behind the drug - you can only test for something if you know what you looking for!

If it is not banned at the time is it illegal?

So is it not like getting a speeding fine for doing a 100km/h in a zone which was marked 80km/h the previous week but now is marked 100Km/h?

On the flip side their have been cyclist who were banned for drugs which were illegal at the time but now are off the banned list - should they be reinstated?

my favourite tour doping story goes back to the 1920s, the tale of pelissier brothers.

"You have no idea what the Tour de France is. Do you know how we keep going? Look, this is cocaine, chloroform, too. And pills? You want to see pills? Here are three boxes - We run on dynamite." Henri P?lissier, after abandoning the 1924 Tour.

Hi Jenna-Lee

Maybe you should start by writing to the UCI and CSA to get the official reason why drugs where banned in the first place.

And then write to Chunky and GO to get an idea of what really happens in the peleton... You will have to balance the official position with reality...

I am a journalism student writing a report on the use of drugs in sports. The actual topic is: Why athletes should be allowed to use performance enhancing drugs - Obviously this is a rather difficult article to write. I was interested in your opinions on this matter? I am not asking if you use them, that is irrelevant, but I do want to know if you think athletes should be allowed to use them?

[/quote']

If you make drugs legal, you tell the juniors they'll have to take drugs to compete.Angry

Do you want to see teenagers use even more drugs?  Do you want to legalise long-term hormone or cortisone use during puberty?  Legalise tik (amphetamines -- which used to be popular performance enhancement)?Angry

Don't you think the drugs problem (e, cocaine, etc.) is bad enough yet amongst teenagers?

What's next?  Employers give employees cocaine so they can concentrate better at work?Embarrassed

I know as a journalist you should be objective, but your professor just asked you to write an article to be positive about abuse, and I wouldn't be able to do it.Ouch

This requires a change of philosophy.  If you can't chase the cheats, stop chasing!  The system isn't working.  So find the bugs, and fix 'em.  Don't patch it.

In sport: (1) biological passport, (2) disallow all doctors, except WADA approved doctors, (3) make drug testing independent of the UCI.

(1) is important to catch new drugs without having to develop new tests.  Stop chasing.

(2) is important to stop drugs before they reach the athletes.  Cut them off at the source.

(3) is important because the UCI has a vested interest in letting some drugs sneak past.  Follow the money.

LOL! This thread has some potential for the day... I dont think this topic will ever be agreed upon... but the idea that GreyOwl had about making it legal and making it easier and more controlled by the cycling fraternity makes sense... When you are doing things on the sly... it can be very dangerous.. someone will tell you, " use this stuff, it good..." and you dont have the option to go around asking about it... If it was legal, atleast you would be alot better informed.

Drugs in sport is cheating, but if it was more controlled and it was not illegal, the playing fields would be leveled out..

My 2c worth...

Doping has already slowed down...

Athletes know that its not neccesary to take the dosages of a few years back. Its already getting 'safer'. The teams managers and doctors are also a bit more knowledgable about how much iis neccessary.

The problem comes from the illinformed athletes. The weekend warrior who wants to beat his friend at the Argus. The Cyclelab bunch is best for this. A 3 30 Argus from a guy who has a bit of extra cash. He gets ripped off by paying R5k for a box of eprex. He then goes and doses himself with EPo something he knows nothing about. Thats dangerous.

If its done right there is no problem. No South African pro has dropped dead yet, and trust me South Africans are not scared of EPO.LOLLOLLOL
