PPA One Tonner logistics

Seriously gluvsMtb, no... You don't need less events to organise them better. More than a 1000 riders rode on Sunday so the interest is there despite the flawed organisation.

And I'm sure the vast majority of the riders had a good time, the post race entertainment is frankly not really important in the bigger scheme of things.

Only thing i agree with is that we seriously need a bigger effort to get road closures. even partial ones - starting with our 2nd biggest race the (ex)-Burger

For many it is quite nice to have a drink or a bite with their mates at the venue.

I recall a PPA race a while ago where I finished top half of the field in the ling route and missed the medal, timing and coke truck as everyone 'wanted to go and watch the rugby'

Places like Bloem, Porterville and Oudtshoorn don't see events every weekend, so when they come around, you can be sure that the folk puts up a good show.

You had me there...

Yes the PPA post race "entertainment" suck, but that doesn't really bother me - that's what's MTB events are there for....

logistics are stretched as it is! Surely you are joking about 2 events per weekend?

A possible solution is to have LESS events, PAY your marshals well, try and get ROAD CLOSURES for some of the sections and have SUFFICIENT support to ensure that injured / stranded riders still get back to the start at a reasonable time.

Something like the 1-Tonner should be an occasion. Perhaps the lack of entertainment and a vibe is because events are just more of the same every weekend. Lets face it, we only have about 4 routes with a few permutations of these for all our races, so why not then just have 4 road events a year and make these count?

15 years ago when PPA was small they ran 2 races a weekend, it was not that big a deal. You only get good at something when you do it over and over again.

There is enough money to have support and back up etc. Having the same route for four weekends in a row is not the end of the world, I did the Lights by Linea winter series and that was 4 weeks of laps around Paarl/Franshoek of 160km. It was great, you can see if you are improving on the course and the weather conditions and group provided enough variation.

If you want a cool beverage, some shade and a hot dog, organise it yourself, we did this for one tonner and west coast express and it was awesome. Just takes a little effort.

I think you are missing the point of the fun rides. It is to get out on your bike in a relatively sage environment.

You need to grow the sport, have more riders riding each weekend and then the bigger races then may get road closures.

Myself and 3 other guys came down at the 60 km mark. It was a 50 kmh crash. The one oke broke his collarbone and we waited 1h15min for an ambulance. Ambulance and sweep vehicle was summoned immediately by the think bike marshal. Thank you to him for being their to see to us. I got back by calling our club100 club car. First medic I went to at the finish said she could not see to my wounds. Found another medic, angelique, and she saw to me. 4 hours after the accident. That was probably the last time I ride for the year due to my injuries.

That's really bleak. Sorry to hear about your incident. Were you in the c d group? Think were passed you guys just after out happened.

They should really have three ambulances on the route so that its max 20min wait. I think that would be reasonable.

PPA sent me a reply, explained everything and promised that things will get better in terms of logistics and medical services.

I knew that this will happen and believe that those who experience accidents / breakdowns will have a much better experience than what most went through on Sunday.

kudos to the PPA for taking these things seriously
