They're a special design for riding on cobbles, because the best place to put your hands for all the pounding and jarring is on the tops of the bars (pic below). That's why they put those little brake levers there as well, because once you're holding on to the tops it's very difficult to get your hands down to the brake leavers quickly enough in a tight pace line in an emergency. Riders will also double up on the bar tape on the tops of the handlebars as well - to help dampen the jarring on the wrists and arms.

Slowbee Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 thanks guys. while on this - what are the rules regarding the bikes? can they do whatever modifications they like, change bikes (thinking of the crash here) etc? Is the only rule the weight limit and design?
