excuse my ignorance but why is especially diesel rising so much?

Well in South Africa the growth for demand of diesel outstripped the growth of demand for petrol. Easy to understand since more people are shifting to diesel as a more efficient fuel source. Now' date=' extrapolate this on a global scale and it becomes apparent that it is this global demand for diesel which is driving the price northwards.

Diesel owners can expect to pay R10/litre by December 2008! Petrol will follow suit but it might hit us only in the 3rd quarter of 2009, meaning that we would be looking at upwardly mobile inflation going into 2010...

thanx style man

so it's the demand?!

are diesel and petrol very different in the production - i.e. the one more difficult to produce and so more expensive? or isn't there a real difference and the economy is just the demand to make more moohla's?

Think about the following:

Diesel car cost roughly R20000 more than petrol car. R20000 / R8 per litre = 2500 litres of petrol x 10 km/l = 25000 km traveled.

Service costs for Diesel cars are almost 2x more than your petrol carsConfused

Does it make sense to buy diesel cars?

i think it really depends on how much you travell with the car. but if you look at a golf tdi for example - you can easily drive them with less then 6 l/100 km which is quite nice.

but on the other hand the new fsi technologies allow petrol cars to be very low in petrol consumption as well but also the car is cheaper and the petrol in this country as well.

They made the comparison on TV that you would have to travel 100 000km to get your money back spend on a diesel car. By that time you need to replace the car anyway.

does your car dealer tell you that you have to get a new car every 100.000 km?

No but that is when warrantee and service plan runs out.

And your point is? It's also when you can see youself getting out of HP payments?

I like my diesel bakkie. Plain and simple. It rattles and shakes and growls and saves me hundreds by not being fast enough to get caught in a speed trap. It is perfect for my needs, but I do agree that spending R800 to fill up, is a bit of a riller.

Commuting to work on my bicycle saves me thousands, though.

service plan...that's the reason why people go to the brand dealer and get cars serviced and fixed for sometimes double what it costs somewhere else?

but if it's warranty that you worry about then u'll have to get a new car of course. If the car is reliable, offers all the needed comfort, then why shouldn't you stick to it and "save" money? opposed to buy a new flippen expensive car and loose quite a big amount of money in the first 2-3 years?

well said legendary one!

i can't wait for my car to be out of it's 2 year extended warranty - that will be a good couple of months after i've paid it off and then i can really start to save.

but i'm saving on petrol anyway by using the baaik (Honda)

Most diesel engines last a lot longer than 100 000km, especially modern models.

Take a look at the VW Passat TDI 1.9, service intervals are every 12000-15000km. Plus it still gets approx 19km to a litre.

On modern cars nowadays the service intervals are generally the same on petrol or diesel.

Hopefully we see more hybrid cars of the diesel variety. Take a look at last months Popular Mechanics, there are a few surprises. Especially the Polo Diesel vs Toyota Hybrid.

I have a motorplan, and a friend who is high up in the motor industry told me "use your motorplan. If your car squeaks, send it in"

Advice I have used, and its saved me in the past.

I was thinking of getting an old 2.4diesel Toyota Hilux from the early '90's! Apparently they run forever? Or do I believe everything I'm told?!
