Deforestation

Hi All,

I rode at tokai yesterday and it made me super sad to see that the deforestation is really happening big time. I am conscious that stopping it is no easy task, but I also couldn't find any group or anybody to at least raise the topic.

I would love to see mtb riders trying to do something about it or at least trying to save a little part of the forest. I am super keen to do something about, are you too? Riders, shops and anybody else who just love spending time in the forest, what are you saying?

Cheers guys,

I thought the same thing at Giba Gorge the other day - vast swathes of bush are gone, replaced by factories and industry.

The price of progress, I guess.

Sad, really.

deforestation in this country should really be specific to destroying indigenous forests. I have ABSOLUTELY no issues with pine/gum/wattle/poplar etc plantations being converted to grassland or fynbos - that in my mind is progress

Pines have been in SA for ages and it "isn't" and indigenous specie. I get your point, but try to think how many animals are in the forest now? So humain planted it, and now that the wildlife grew and adapted to it, it is time to destroy it???? Come on!

I have heard that Howick's Home Jerome is to be harvested soon. Was inevitable as it is Sappi plantation but it's sad to loose such a nice piece of single track nonetheless. I must say Sappi are very generous to us to let us use their forest for trails.

Agree if it is a commercial forest so be it, that is what it was planted for in the first place.

Indigenous Forest are not allowed to be cut by law as they are protected

Like it or not all those pines at Tokai are going, there is a whole process taking place right now to do that.

The hope is that the original species will re-establish themselves in place of the pine and for that to happen the pines have to go soon.

It's a commercial forest being cut down and replaced with Indigenous  fynbos, nothing to complain about ecologically. But the poor cyclists who have to ride in the hot fynbos are complaining

You are not the first person to post on this issue. I was trying to inform you that it has been gone over many times. My "thinking" has nothing to do with it I am telling you a "fact".

If you are so concerned find out a bit more and then try and go and save it. Let us know how that works out for you.

That is what I am trying to do :-) Like I said in my first post, I am conscious it isn't easy task. I have just made a search this morning and found nothing about it!

That said, some comments being posted are making sense, and I definitely understand it.

I am not pretending to know anything about what is going on, so just trying to find out what people think and if there is something that can be done about it.
