Event Name: Mitsubishi Sani Dragon
When: 25 September 2015 - 26 September 2015
Where: Underberg, Kwazulu-Natal
Category: MTB

The Mitsubishi Sani Dragon sponsored by Eurocar Kokstad is a 2-day MTB stage race on the 25th and 26th of September 2015 in the Underberg area of Southern KZN. The event will take place over the same period as the annual Underberg Farmer’s Association (UFA) Agricultural Show starting and finishing each day at the UFA Showgrounds.

Day 1 will be approximately 70km in length and will form a large loop incorporating some of the most scenic district roads, jeep tracks and single track in the Underberg & Himeville area.

Day 2 will be just over 60km in length and will be highlighted by a climb to the summit of the famous Sani Pass before returning back to the Showgrounds. There is no other MTB event that incorporates the Sani Pass.

There will also be a DRAGON LITE event but with lesser distances of approximately 40km each day. Day 2 will be a climb to the SA Border Post rather than the summit of Sani Pass.

Both events will follow a Team of Two format but there will be limited availability for solo riders.

I hoped that the race would have a mountain top finish, the descent is going to be a ticky with riders and vehicles.

That would've made a beer at the pub much more rewarding.

I don't think the pass will be open for cars that morning, I could be wrong but I doubt it

They don't normally close the road as it's the route from Lesotho used by civilians. the cars are very slow on the road so easy to evoid.

I mailed the race organizers about a week ago to ask about profiles and they had the following to say;

"We are still working on the profile for day 1 as we have to negotiate with various land owners with regards to access etc. As you can appreciate is a complex process and we have to ensure that the route is accurate before we publish any details.

All I can say to help is that day 1 for the main event is going to be over 1000m of climbing and over 60km in distance. So not a real tough day in the saddle, and it will not be a technical ride. Day 2 to the top of the pass will be just over 60km total distance (to top and back to finish) and it is approx. 1800m climb to the top, but it is the Sani Pass."
