Road handle bar width

Currently I ride with 44cm wide handle bars, but I really dont feel comfortable with them. It always feels like my hands are closer together than shoulder width.

Now I am considering changing my set up (maybe even a bike) for the more long distance riding (think PBP, LEL, RAAM etc).

Do you get road bars wider than 44cm? Or is that it, my thinking is to possibly get short tri bar type things so as to have different hand postions. OR(!!) should it just be sucked up and get a hybrid type bike with straight handle bars ?

This is such a tricky thing to have to decide !?

Tandems often have wider bars at the back because the captain obviously sits in between them, So if you do struggle maybe add tandem specific bars to your search. Only problem you might have that you must check is the thickness of the bars where they attach to the stem as some of the tandem bars don't get thicker at the mounting point like a lot of the new road bars do.

Just be sure how the manufacturer measures the road bar - the proper way is centre-to-centre at the end of the drops (a la Cinelli). Some US bars are measured to the outside of the drops. So a 44cm Cinelli bar is the same width as a 46cm Easton bar (I think it was Easton).
