Hi

I am planning to buy my first mountain bike. I need some advice on what bike would be best on a 13k budget.

I was looking at 27.5ers, but after consideration i think it's best that i go with a 29er.

These are some options i have been looking at:

  • Silverback Sola 2
  • Momsem AL429 (2014 the 2015 is R16k +)
  • Merida Big Nine 500 (2015)

I read this article http://www.bicycling.co.za/bikes-gear/budget-bike-reviews/12/

It says that the Momsem is the best out of the lot. Although it was compared to the 2014 Merida, not the 2015 - anyone know what the differences are?

What would you recommend? any other suggestions?

go second hand, you'll get a much better deal and there are loads of good bikes for sale on this forum

Buying second hand is not really advisable for a newbie to the sport. They have no idea what to look out for, nor do they know value. Also, they may pay more in maintenance than an old hand who knows to fix it themselves.

And by no means am I against buying 2nd hand. I've done both and had excellent buys 2nd hand as well, but I bought where I knew what to look for.

There are new GT's for under 13k.

Silverback, Merida and GT (I ride GT, so very biased towards it). GT has great value for money and make great bikes, as do Silverback and Merida. I'm not really a Momsen fan, although the spec is great mostly, but their frames are standard ordered frames.

Funny how MOST bikes for sale on the hub have all "hardly been used"... :whistling: Who are these people that buy MTB's and park them in their garages for two years only to sell them at a loss?

I have had my Bergamont Revox 5.3 2013 model since January '14. I bought it new and have around 1000 kays on the clock. It would be more, but I travel a sh!t load for work, just saying...I also started riding August last year, and my Bergie was my first buy. I agree with @('Travis'); about buying new first time round, I was a complete noob when I started and did not know what to look for in a bike at the time. I got some help from a mate who has done the epic and w2w, so he gave me good advice. My offering is to get some info or assistance from those in the know, and be prepared to do some serious window shopping before parting with your cash.

Don't entirely agree.

Thehub is a wealth of information and people who can guide on what to buy, what to look for and what is a good price. And secondhand may be a better option as they'll get something better than new and for less and won't loose as much if they decide not to carry on with the sport.

All bikes require maintenance and there have been some horror stories on thehub about brand new bikes that have fallen apart the first time they were ridden. I recon there are guys on the hub that look after their bikes better than the shops. Maintenance on an MTB is a given so can't be afacotr with a new vs secondhand bike. imho

I say ask loads of questions here on the hub, ask for opinions on any bikes you see before you buy and you'll be guided and helped out nicely.

I'm also not against buying new and if you can and want to buy new then go for it. There are loads of good bike shops as well that won't rip you off.

But the arguements above aren't really valid imho

Hi

Ja, I didn't really want to buy 2nd hand, because i really wouldn't know what to look out for.

CWC in Greenpoint recommended the Merida. They are 1km down the road from me. I liked the idea of buying from them in case i have any issues.

If I were you watch the classifieds for a few days.

I sold a basically brand new Fuji 29er that I upgraded to full XT and tubeless for R8000 about a year ago.

Good deals come along often. Also, use the Hub forum if you are unsure of a certain purchase, guys will gladly offer their opinion on the one you could be interested in.

Maybe you could look out for good deals on new older models? I got my first mtb about a month back from solomons and got (apparently) R4000 off the original retail price 'cause it was 2013 model...

Well if you feel comfortable with them, then there is your answer....

Trick to these things when not sure, is, go with the one you WANT.

Good luck.

yeah, I've been looking through the classifieds. Just takes a while as I'm not familiar with many of the model numbers etc. So i have to go and research each bike, find RRP's etc.

I was kinda hoping to get some input on what the best new bike under 13k would be.

The article referenced above is a little outdated.
