Hi guys

Taking the missus for a weekend away to Draaihoek Lodge near Dwarskersbos.

We want to go for some rides in the area, worst case scenario we'll pick a dirt road and ride that.

Just thought I'd ask whether any of you know of any trails or places that's nice for riding close to Dwarskersbos / Elandsbaai.

Cheers

I've been going to EBay for years to surf, but the only bit I have ridden on my bike is the koppie above E Bay itself and the transnet road towards Lamberts. There is not much in the way of trails anywhere in the area, unless it's all hiding in private land unfortunately!

Thanks, that's more or less what I thought as I tried searching Strava too, but came up with very little.

It's 22km from Draaihoek Lodge to Elandsbaai, will probably just ride there for breakfast and back. Hopefully the road isn't too busy, but from what I remember, it isnt tar, so that would help to limit the amount of traffic there.

Will still take the bikes though

There is a tar road that snakes around the valley and eventually over the hill into Elands that has plenty of trucks taking raw material to Saldana from the North and heading back from the South. I would ride the short stretch to the first railway bridge and hang a left towards the flat top overlooking E Bay on the transnet dirt road. Super quiet by comparison and obviously far safer!

Stayed at Lamberts Bay a while ago and hit the railway road from Lamberts Bay to Doringbaai...there and back was 76km with 160m ascent.

Hi

Can someone please confirm if this is still open/possible?  (Or alternatives from LB?)

There for the Malkop festival 5/6 Dec while the Atta is on the horizon.

The road to Elands has been tarred (Terribly). There's loads of potholes and there's no hard shoulder so I'd avoid this on a bicycle.

I'd say the safest option on a bike is to grab the railway road at the first bridge after dwarskersbos. Technically you need a permit for the road but I've only ever been stopped once. And that was on my last trip up there just over a month ago. There are 3 railway bridges.

There are trails inland in the cederberg. Not exactly close and at that time of year KAAAK hot.

@Tubehunter. I surfed COOKING Elands about 5 weeks ago and I still Rip. I couldn't believe it. I've been on a board 3 times in the last 12 years. Guess it's like riding a bike. Haha. Such a fun wave. Was stoked. Stayed in the Straw Bale house. It's on the wrong side of the hotel but it's still a great place to stay.

As far as I know the road along the railwayline can still be cycled (with mtb of course)...yes its a "toll road" but they hardly pay any attention to cyclist using it...I just waved when I passed the "toll house" and the guard waved back...so I guess smile and wave and you will be fine

Look at Aurora, some decent roads/ tracks up there. Not too sure of any specific trail names though. Another option is in Koringberg. It's a bit of a shlep to get there but the lady on the farm is pretty cool and it was free when I was there.

Again not sure of the farms name but I'm sure if you google the town names they should pop up.

Good luck.

This was last year already :)

We just cycled the service road next to the railway line.

Was quite boring but good exercise.

Think in 40km we had a 60m ascent or something ridiculous.

We did however have the entire road to ourselves, really peaceful.
