Stunning.... we have very similar taste in bikes sir. That is exactly what my Niner would have looked like. Great build.

What time are you off in 94.7 ?

Perhaps you should join a few Jo'burg based fat takkie road bikes for a gentle cruise....

My firm has a corporate charity thing. I think that we are off at 7h50. What is your start time? I would love to see the Niner. You can catch up with the Ritchey.

Been wondering when you would post some pics

Congrats. Looks great.

How does it ride?

I took it out for a brief two hour ride on the dirt roads alongside the Vaal river yesterday. It was too short to give a definitive answer but some first observations:

The size and setup is spot on. It makes a huge difference and I was comfortable form the first peddle stroke.

I kept some space on the top of the steerer for when I want to do a long trip and need to lift the bars. Riding in the drops was very comfortable.

The geometry is very good and suits me very well; it is stable without being sluggish and I can see it being a pleasure on long sweeping downhill stretches. I rode for about 10 minutes along a dirt road,  sitting up, hands behind my back and never had a wobble.

The frame, seat post, saddle and 40mm 120ply Clement MSOs soak up corrugations nicely although I must still figure out the right pressures. I think I can go a bit lower but as I did not have a digital gauge with me cannot even say what I ran.

The tyres rolled nicely on the short stretch of tar I did, had good grip on damp dirt, did not pick up much mud when I went to seek it out (actually, at times could not avoid it) but would not be my first choice tyre pattern for a sandy or muddy ride. Overall, very happy with the tyres.

The saddle, a Brooks Cambium C15 with a cut out will need getting used to as it has a bit of give in it and I usually ride firm saddles. The rear of the saddle fits my sit-bones well.

I transferred the drivechain, cockpit, controls and brakes from an old bike so they were known entities.

Will load it next week and after a three day ride in the Drakensberg will know more.

I'm due off at 6:50 but after my B&B prang and broken ribs am not planning on racing. Will probably drop back and have a chilled ride.

Congrats. That was quick. Share some build specs and pics

Nothing racing or fancy.  Will use what I have lying about.  3 x 9 to start with.  May need a decent set of road wheels.  Suspension stem and seat post, Mary, Carnegie or Midge bars, not sure. Definately dual controls x 9 sp   12/36 otherwise perhaps 105/Ultegra 10 speed.  See what fits best for my requirements. Saddle - Rolls. Adamo or Murray?

No idea what I would like at this stage but it is going to be whole lot of fun finding out!

Okay keep me informed. You have my number. I am riding in a group of MTBers so our pace will be nice and steady. Feel free to join us.

I also don't see the need for expensive and fancy parts on this type of bike. Have a look at Ritchey bars as well. Got mine from Smamus

Thanks but I can't ride drops.  Midges are about the best for me.

Where could I possibly get an acceptable set of disc road wheels for this frame?  Any ideas?

Mine are custom build. Not sure what is available locally, but disc road wheels tend to have less spokes. Maybe American classic if your budget allows it from evobikes? Bike24 has some disc road wheels that are not too pricey from Mavic, DT Swiss amongst others.

As everyone is going WIIIIIIDDDDEEEER on their MTB wheels, find a good old narrow (say 19mm internal width) second hand 29er wheel set in the Classifieds. Something like Crest on Hope would be ideal.

You will be able to run anything from 25c to 45mm tyres and wider on them.

Thanks.  I have a couple of sets of 19 MTB wheels.  Will have to do until I can aford a decent set of road wheels.  Guess I will have to have them made up.
