Does it get any better than Jonkershoek when it comes to trail and downhill riding in the Western Ca

That little piece where Bennet's flow trail is.

There's SO much potential just in that area. Could have a full on flow/skills/terrain park RIGHT THERE! The gradient is amazing.

There are so many natural features all over that slope.

This might be better suited to a different thread but what the heck, what are your favorite sections of trail to ride in normal day at Jonkers? I normally ride fire trail right from the top as a warm up and then I cruise the the opposite side of the valley to climb up to the top of upper canaries and link that with everything below the Double Black Diamond trail. Though that new section they built with the ladder bridges and big gap jumps does warrant an extra trek up that lung buster of a hill!

I took my girlfriend for her first ever ride on a mountain bike yesterday to Jonkers. We rode the bottom firehut section twice.

Just as an intro to riding. I just gave her a few pointers like looking through the corners, Standing, Body positioning and braking and off we went. I was super impressed with her ability to ride immediately. But also with the way the trail is built. We usually go through there Wide open and it flows well. But at a more pedestrian pace it flows well too.

Second time around she was noticeably faster and less twitchy by looking through the corners and lifting her head.

Which direction do you ride the trail? Is it best to do the firehut trail from the hut side or the quarry side

We rode up the road to the entrance of the bottom firehut. Did that twice.

We usually ride up the road and instead of going all the way to the firehut we turn up to the quarry and enter from the 2nd firehut. It's better value in my opinion.

Jonkers is becoming too easy - too flowy!

If you want to ride smooth there are highways

Still love it though)

There are plenty of challenges left in Jonkershoek (fire hut trail for instance). The fact that some of the trails are now a bit more family friendly is indicative of the feedback received from the majority of the trail users and contributors towards the trail fund.

It's the canaries I feel that have become too smooth - Jonkers had a bit for everyone

I accept that there is always an element of "over repair" done on trails as there is not enough resources to repair regularly. Give it 3 months of high summer and those loose, dusty and washed out sections will be as interesting as ever. I find that I am now exploring more direct lines in the Canaries as I have more confidence in the conditions under foot (or wheel in this case).

Thanks. Did it today and really enjoyed it!

I had a glimpse in December. Was shown around by @NicoBoshoff. Man, I had a great time!

Went down to Jonkers and did a section of Canaries, Never ending story and firehut. I loved it. Of everything I rode whilst down there firehut was probably my favourite section. The variety of trails just inside Jonkers was mind blowing!

We also rode Welvanpas which is another gem... and again something completely diffferent to Jonkers. I still get teary eyed when I think of that sunrise in the Bains Kloof.

Another highlight was Rhebokskloof. For me, the trails there are a lot less rough and technical than the other two. It's just fast and flowing singletrack all the way down the mountain. Not being an insane downhill demon, in stark contrast to my tour guide, this probably suited my riding best.

To get to my point; I don't believe you should try and compare these. They are all just so awesome in their own right and each trail has something that sets it apart from the rest. As a place to go back to every weekend, it probably has to be Jonkers, simply because of the sheer volume of trails packed into the park.

As Squire said, we did more of a "Big Mountain" loop by foregoing the usual Bennets - Flow descent and rather opting for the tearjerker of a climb to the top of Neverending.  That gives your day a bit more of an adventurous feel to it IMO.  Frankly that is my favourite trek to make on the trail bike. Massive puke-inducing climbs, exposed trails and then solitude all the way down to the valley floor.  Closest I've experienced to the back country rides we did in France and Switzerland.

Firtehut is probably the best trail in the WC when it comes to pure flow and making sense of landscape.  Except for a small section near the end, you can roll the entire trail top to bottom without a pedal stroke.  Of course, where's the fun in that ;)

The Top Canaries levels to me offer the most technical riding in Jonkers (each level getting gradually less demanding/rocky).  Double Black and Bennets has the reputation of being the big ones, but that's because of the jumps and drops.  You can avoid them with ease, but Canaries forces you to man up when you ride it all the way from the top.

Frankly my ideal day at Jonkers would be to just ride every trail top to bottom.  As Squire says, each trail offers a unique riding experience and a different feeling.  It truly is an amazing area to ride in.

Everyone should do themselves a favour and go ride their local trails with an out-of-towner.  Great for perspective and it forces you to think about what you are riding.  Never get complacent about what amazing trails we have.
