Does it get any better than Jonkershoek when it comes to trail and downhill riding in the Western Ca

My "quick" (+ road time to and from town).ride is to ride up the canaries and exit just above the Boletus section. Then I cut across back to flow and ride that back down to the gate before cutting across to other side and climbing up to quarry and doing firehut 2 &3.

If i've got more than 2 hours, I'll climb up to Ellioti (never ending) either via canaries, or heartbreak hill if im feeling like killing myself, then taking that ST all the way down to circle, chilling a bit on the jeep track and then climbing up that single track from circle back up to fire hut and back down to gate. Thats a decent ride too.

I'm in Jonkers quite a lot, but just noticed that the sign at very bottom of Fire Hut says: "Give way to descending riders" and then directly below that "DANGER DO NOT ENTER". So which is it? I get annoyed at people climbing up fire hut, but are you actually allowed to do that?

I love riding around the Durbanville area, some nice stuff there. Contermanskloof is probably my favourite in the area. Some really nice downhill trails there.

Tokai is also a favourite but costs 60 bucks now :(

Never been to Jonkers, but reading this thread makes me want to go. How much is the trail fee there?

Sorry its Afrika Bike, its build on the le grand estate, check Afrikabike.com for details, easy to find just drive straight through Packaltsdorp

as an ex-georgian, just for the sake of better human understanding, do NOT ride through Pacaltsdorp unless you want to walk home, maybe even with a nice gash or two from a stab wound.

WHAAAT?

It's the closest thing I've experienced to riding the in the Alps here.

Now I am confused, which is it? IMBA insists that descending riders should give way to ascending riders, and a boat load of hubbers seem to agree, now I would like to know, do I have it right when I am huffing and puffing up a hill and some oke comes barging down the ST form the opposite side, to pull aside, even dismount on the odd occasion, to let him pass?

I always seem to get the short end of this stick both when I;m going up or coming down... :offtopic:

I ride up there from time to time but ALWAYS give way to descending riders. To be fair I haven't in a good while.

Yeah but IMBA continues to say unless signposted otherwise.

Yes, on a two-way trail you give way to ascending riders. These firehut signs are confusing as on one hand they are telling you DO NOT ENTER (ride up) and then "Give way to descending riders" (i.e. don't come up here, but if you do: give way to the riders coming down).

Unless indicated otherwise. On most ct trails, it's indicated otherwise. Therefore that rule if thumb does not apply.

What part of "DO NOT ENTER" do you not understand so the I can help you.

The "do not enter" sign was placed the last or is the most recent.

So if you do enter why would you yield to descending riders you are already doing what you should not.

Dude, it's conflicting signage. It clearly says "give way to descending riders" and then immediately thereafter "no entry"

What is the last thing it says?

BTW - calculate the distance (roughly) that you (descending) need to slow down to a speed where it is "safe" to pass an ascending rider esp those who have their heads down blissfully unaware of your presence.

Remember fire hut trail = dh flow.

Which is why I push up the trails.

But anyway. It's either yield to descending or no entry. Not both. Yield to descending implies a dual direction trail. No entry implies mono directional trail. To have both on the same signpost is misleading.

Which reminds me. I need to ask Brood Opman about that next time I see him. One of those signs needs to be removed.
