Tokai prices and gate times

So Tokai forest has increased their rider entry prices from R45 to R60 in November. A bit of a jump if i have to say so myself. Even though there are less of a forest to ride through, no safety guards in the forest and no water points, so what are we actually paying for? Salaries that i can understand but they are not making the forest better, as a matter of fact the jeep track has huge sink holes in it now and someone tried to fill it up with rocks. So to try and avoid the ridiculous price increase people have been arriving at Tokai before 0800. That's when the staff starts to work at the gate. So any time before 0800 you would go in for free. Well today i think they sucker punched us all. They were waiting for us. I asked when i had to pay and they said they are going to be there now at wait for it ....... 0500. Just so that they can get us to pay. 0500 WTF????? A while a go i heard a family of four (4) complaining cause they cant afford to enter. At R240 that's steep for anyone. Sure get a wild card at R435 for a single or R710 for 2 people. For a family up to 7 members its R870. All still pretty steep prices. I dont even think my virgin membership a year costs that much. Is Tokai the only place Mountain side we can ride without going to Durbanville farms.? Table Mountain is a crime hot spot but it is free. Free ride but stand a chance of being mugged! mmmm tough choice! All other trails on the mountain are banned for cycling. So hubbers any ideas?

Table Mountain is not free either. You need a San Parks Activity card. Which costs R400 for the year. You can use the card to access Tokai as well.

Table mountain s pretty safe these days. I ride it week days on my way to the office.

I agree with you on your complaints about pricing, the state of the place etc etc. If you bear in mind that Sanparks is the government and compare it to say Eskom for example it will all make sense.

Mismanagement

Lack of maintenance

Shocking security

CEO's embroiled in corruption scandals

Etc Etc.

But just for the record. Arriving before 8 doesn't make you immune from the charge to ride there. If you ride without paying you are effectively trespassing therefore rendering your complaints totally without merit. It's kind of like stealing electricity and bitching about blackouts.

And then to admit to not paying to ride there and complaining about the fact that they want you to pay on a public forum might not be the brightest thing you've ever done.

Riding on TM is also not free. You are supposed to have an activity card.

My Suggestion to  you is ride on the road where it's free.

They carry a huge risk if you read all the threads.

You will be surprized at what people get up to. So, pay the price or dont ride... if you dont like the price, dont support them.

Unfortunately thats life. Other people make it bad for others!

Btw, if you do enter for free before the staff arrive at the gate, you are likely to get stopped somewhere on the mountain by a ranger that will ask for your activity card or your day ticket. Not nice if you haven't got either, even worse if you get aggro about it. They are patrolling more than ever before. I got stopped once and discovered that the expiry date on my card was incorrect. (The person that issued it wrote the wrong year in the wrong place.) I was escorted to the paypoint and had to pay for a day ticket and come back later during office hours to get the card sorted.

Jonkershoek is now R350 or something to that tune for a year family card, 4 members I believe. Yip plenty of guys still slip to the right and throw bikes over the fence, but the routes are maintained and expanded (granted plenty is done by private guys and brands ) at that price you are silly to take a risk of being caught with egg on the face. Paarl berg is for gratis, not sure what the deal is on the DH sections; not my vibe that!

Just buy the year card.

valid point. i always paid when it was R45 cause thats pretty much what i can live with. But now the sudden jump from R45 to R60 is nuts. thats when i start skipping the gate fee. dont feel that im getting my moneys worth unless i ride myself into a coma to get my R60 worth. I usually ride to the silvermine gate do the loop come back down with some single tracks and go home. a good 3+hour ride. Still i feel they could do more for us. In summer leave water points on levels and at sertain section an emergency point for just in case someone had bigger balls than brains. i agree with the corruption thing but i feel we all can make a diff here cause walkers dont pay its mainly us. Skip riding there for a month or two then make em sweat a bit. Its us who can get our concerns heard. in the government is not so easy. we dont have the majority of voices.

see those trails i can undrstand cause people have put some real man hours in to get that place nice. also they maintain it. as for tokai you hardly see them fixing anything. a 3rd party builds the ramps and jumps out of their own pocket. them ill support due to their effort and hardwork. Tokai is like a toll road now with no maintenance. Ill pay to ride but ripping is off is another problem, Show us where our money is being utilized and then we will go "o ok coool here take my money"

Seems it's closer to R500: http://www.sanparks.co.za/parks/table_mountain/tourism/access-cards-permits.php#permits

Level 3 – Horse-riding, mountain biking, line fishing and transport (R460)
