Suspension fork oil leak

Maybe you over filled the lowers oil?

I thought I may have overfilled it. I used 160ml on the damper side. Contacted Fox, but the 160ml was correct (for Fox float RL 32). Actually, it was already beginning to leak with the previous seals. Now it's just worse! :-/

Wondering if I should replace the Fox SKF seals with Enduro ones. Anyone have experience with this?

Those seals should not leak.  You may get a little grease like presence immediately after a service which will soon disappear.  If you overfill the damper it will just reduce your travel - not leak. If you under fill the lockout will not immediately engage.  Any oil visible as an oily line above the seal denotes a problem, either with the seal or the stanchion.

The Fox seals have the wiper and oil seal as one unit while the Enduro have the wiper (blue) and conventional oil seal (black) separate.  Both work equally well.  The big problem is if you have oil leaking you will also get dirt in.  This dirt sits on the foam rings and with the oil converts it into an effective grinder.  Just remember that with a soft material rubbing against a harder one the latter takes the strain!  Similar to a cable housing rubbing against a frame.

I was thinking the lowers bath oil was perhaps over filled, the oil that lubes the stanchions not the damper oil. Or maybe the damper is slowly leaking into the bath oil and that is causing the excess oil, is it leaking on the right leg or both?

When lasts was the damper serviced, is the damper working as expected currently?

Thanks for the advice guys. I never really use the lockout. Just checked it out now... When I lock it out the fork is noticeably stiffer but when I apply pressure it slowly compresses (and leaks more oil from the seal!!!) Could that be a damper issue? Is it a mission to service?

No ways it's a damper issue. Two completely separate systems.

Either you've got a dud seal, a scratch on your stanchions, or the seal's not seated properly.

Bring it to me if you're anywhere near Obs and I'll have a look at it for you.

When last did the fork get a full service, seems like you only did the lowers service? Not sure on a fox but on many RS the damper rebuild is pretty simple, just o rings on the Revelation and an easy job.

It's gonna take a sheet load of oil to "over fill" the lowers.

But if the damper is leaking into the lowers?

Not sure about a Fox but on my RS if the damper leaks into the lowers as I understand it the consequences will be as if you over filled the lowers oil, which may result in reduced travel/hydraulic lockout and perhaps some of the excess oil coming out the stanchion seal?

Why would it result in reduced travel, the air keeps the fork at full extension .

From experience of stripping and rebuilding my Maverick DUC32 fork a few time I can say cleanliness is critical. If you get just a single hair or a fibre from a rag between a seal and a moving part it leaks like crazy. Something to check.

However it seems something more is wrong with this fork. Post your location and Hubbers will hopefully suggest a reliable local suspension guy to check it out for you.
