Is a trail bike + xc bike necessary?

Honest question.

WHAT'S THE DIFFS??

Please explain why you would need a XC and trail bike?

It's all in the geometry and suspension travel, as I understand it.

it would be similar to comparing a range rover, range rover sport and a defender... all 4x4's, all land rovers but each one is subtly different.

XC bikes place the rider in a racing position, while trail bikes are more upright & comfy.  XC bikes are very twitchy at the front, while trail bikes are more relaxed and the steering is less direct.  in addition, trail bikes have more suspension travel - for those really big ramps, drop-offs etc.  There are also subtle differences in things like saddles, handlebars, stems, tyres and so on but I am not qualified to voice an opinion.

that's my 2c worth.

long story short - keep and upgrade the trace - or just ride it as is.

Big can of worms that!!

It is very rider dependant I would say.

But no, unless you are planning on racing XC a trail bike will do.

Besides it will be a lowly specced Anthem @ R15K

And then the Trance is still better cause the Anthem will be crappy spec.

So since you already have a 2014 Trance and it is not like you are picking what to buy, I say you maybe spec up a few nice bits on the Trance, Pick your parts nicely and you could end up with a bike that's just as good or better than most average spec XC bikes at XC and way more fun on the steeps.

New topic - So what you buying first???

Just some advice, pick the upgrades carefully.

Don't pick a light weight wheelset for XC which will hinder any real trail riding. Maybe a spare set of wheels for XC with a bomb proof trail set. Suspension wise run what you have now.

Dropper for trail and a normal post for XC.

Maybe slightly narrower bars for XC andwide for trail.

Etc

So what about the reverse? What can someone do to a XC bike to make it more capable as a trail bike? I have a Specialized Camber 29 (110mm travel) but would like to have more trail type fun with it...

Shorter stem / wider bar, higher volume tires w more grip and a longer fork.

Is it okay to have a bike with different travel front & rear? Like 130mm front with the standard 110mm rear?

Go and look at The thread Bikes for Enduro the restart I posted some vids on some new 29er bikes coming out now with less travel in the rear and more in the front, this is exactly what I'm doing, spoke to Iwan Kemp and Cap yesterday about offset for forks and that I want to also increase my trave from 120mm to 140mm in front, got some good advice from them.

I bought an anthem x 29er.. I then bought a trance 2. Love both my bikes. Trance is being upgraded ( I almost said slowly ) .. trance is my every day trail bike, anthem for less tech rides and races .. but find myself riding the trance all the time. More fun to be had ...

Helps the angle of attack of the head tube (ye I know it sounds cool - "angle of attack" but its true)

Definitely the larger volume tyres... and actually you can run a bigger grippier tyre on the front than rear also.

I like wider bars everywhere ^_^

A nice set of trail wheels can be good and light... there is another formula

GOOD + LIGHTWEIGHT = NOT CHEAP

LIGHTWEIGHT + CHEAP = NOT GOOD

GOOD + CHEAP = NOT LIGHTWEIGHT

There are exceptions but they are very hard to find and not very many...

Yep! In fact on your bike, the Camber, its encouraged!

Huh. Cool :) That's no good for 2015's balance sheet but neither is cycling in general

 Balance sheet???

I have named my 2014 Giant Trance 2 (being black) - the black hole..... explains where the money went and that it is never coming back

 AND I LIKE IT!!!
