Personally I am VERY happy with what KZN MTB does for R50..in fact I would be happy to pay more.

Please educate the ignorant like me, what do you get for that R50?

It is cheap because it only pays out under very specific conditions, ie when something happens when riding your bike not anything else.

Also 20K is not a lot when it comes to medical expenses, it really is just a bit of a "softener"

If you are actually concerned about medical costs when in an accident you still need to take out proper cover.

Its a problem that its cheap and specific ? Not to me it isn't. Its cycle insurance after all and I cycle...that's pretty specific

You right..R20k is not a lot when it comes to medical expenses...except if you don't have a spare R20k laying around..which I dont

I do have proper insurance..and I know what its costs me..

I get 3 XCO/Enduro/DHi Series events a year..and 1 Champs event

I get a Committee that ensures that the 100+ events on the KZN calendar adhere to set standards both in Safety and expectation

I get at least 1 MTB Commissaire at a sanctioned event that makes sure that everyone follows the same rules and sorts out any disputes thereafter

I got to see several  International MTB World Cup Series Races and World Championships in my own country

I have a World Class Trail network on my doorstep...that I don't have to pay 1c to use

I get a lot more than those few points mentioned above. Have a look at http://www.kznmtb.co.za/component/content/article?id=17

Ok, fair enough, although it gets a bit fuzzy for me what is KZNMTB and what is CSA

I wonder to what extent we get those things in the WC (maybe that is why we get a 50% discount on the KZN fee)

No its not a problem that its cheap and specific, I was just commenting on why it is so cheap.

My problem is not the price, it's the principle of a product that is shoved down my throat that I did not ask for and that I do not need. Like you I have proper insurance and medical aid so I don't need extra cover. Why did they not make it optional?

All good...

I think it works a bit like this :

                        Sports & Rec

                                  I

      -------------------------------------------------------

      I                           I                         I

  CSA                         ?                        ?

      I

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- etc

      I                                 I                              I                        I

     C KZN                         C ?                          C ?                    C?

      I

      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      I                          I                          I                                        I

KZN MTB             KZN ROAD           KZN TRACK & PARA           KZN BMX

So Basically CSA is National and each Province should have a Cycling Body (In KZN its KZN Cycling (www.kzncycling.co.za)

Under each Provincial Cycling Body are 4 Cycling Disciplines..and each discipline has a Commission. KZN MTB is the Commission for MTB. Due to the relatively small numbers of Track & Para/BMX I think that they are included under KZN Road to make things easier to manage.

The WC (and every other Province) should have their own Provincial Cycling Bodies and subsequent cycling discipline commissions. MTB wise, http://www.cyclingsa.com/about-mountain-biking/ tells you who your Provincial/Regional representatives are. These are the people that need to answer what they are doing with your affiliation fee is being used for.

I agree that the reason the insurance is so cheap is cause its very specific.

We might find that the reason its not optional is that the price was negotiated on the principle that x amount of sign ups was guaranteed ..and the only way to offer this guarantee was by making it compulsory. Whilst I don't agree with that principle I can see the logic behind it. Unfortunately there are a LOT of riders out there who don't have the means to have decent coverage and there are plenty others who don't think its necessary ..until they desperately need it.

Depends where and what event you do RocknRolla

At KZN MTB sanctioned events its compulsory to have a CSA membership if you doing over 20km in distance. This is checked either automatically (by the ROAG system) or manually. If you don't have a CSA licence and are riding more than 20km then you will have to purchase a CSA day licence at the venue.

I just renewed my CSA membership and got my racing license, since I am a trackie it is a only way to enable me to race at track meets. And I am happy to pay the money. I will gladly pay this, it is a very small amount of money and actually if you participate often enough at any organised event (track and road), and it costs a hell of a lot less than day licenses.

Everybody b!itch and moan about the membership fees, yet buy every gadget under the sun or upgrade on they bike/phone/house etc. The fee is less than a family meal at just about any take-a-way joint. We all could do with a little less junk food anyway.

Every year is the same moans and groans, if you do not want membership or license then you can go without it, take your own insurance and ride for "free" oh and if you participate in an organised event, please pay your day license (gets expensive doesn't it?).

Provincials and Nationals does not come cheap yet most cyclists would at least want provincials and nationals to be hosted, it would be a shame if these events are no longer.

My Problem with this is the fact they do not give us a CHOICE

1. You pay R38 to give you 20 000 coverage for medical expenses, but you are not allowed to belong to two insurance companies or medical aids? Where is my choice?

2.  You pay R38 so they can Claim for the RAF on you behalf, but the RAF does not have money as stated  by someone earlier.

3. It should be my right to choose if I want this or not, and I do not...I am not even allowed to have it according to discovery T&C as far as I understand it.

CSA has now removed my constitutional RIGHT to choose.

I think thats the way the cookie crumbles nowadays..its not only them...at least its only R38...my daughters school charges me R400 for compulsory non negotiable medical insurance that I don't need

As the insurance is a Hollard Product will they insure riders on the Hollard JUMA 2015 for crashes?

IF the event is CSA sanctioned (and therefore Provincial Body sanctioned) and adheres to its specific regulations..then I would hazard a guess at Yes

One of those questions you need to ask your Provincial/Regional Rep and Committee.

This is an example of why Provincial/Regional representation is so important. It gives you, as a rider, the ability to make queries direct. It also makes event organizers sit up and realize that they have to adhere to minimum requirements.

Has no bearing on properly sanctioned etc. etc. they say the R 38.00 covers for all riding organized or social.

I missed that point..but if its there even better then. For R38 you covered regardless.

Looking at the CSA website this seems as if it is NOT a medical aid, but rather medical insurance. quite different, so there should not be any issues with your current medical aif service provider and fraud etc.
