Front Wheel Allignment

What do you do with an off-centre wheel? I got my front wheel back from the LBS after a rim-replacement. After 12 days without an MTB I was quite excited to take her for a spin when... my front wheel was clearly off-centre - see figure 1 below.

  • The fork legs are both resting on the axle - as they should
  • I flipped the wheel upside down - the aligned seem to be corrected.
  • I removed the brake calliper - to see if it had any influence - it didn't
  • I tried to fit a road wheel - it seemed to be centre aligned.
  •

I will probably take the bike to the LBS...again, but I still want to know why my wheel is off centre  :(

Dishing of the wheel is off.

Take back to lbs or take to a proper wheelbuilder. Anton at summit cycles in midrand is as good as you'll find!

Your wheel needs to be dished.

Thanks for the feedback. I sort of hope it only is a dishing problem (and not fork related...) - but c'mon - the wheel is fresh out of the workshop  :cursing:

Unfortunately Midrand is a bit far from the WC...

Sorry for gate-crashing:

How much did you pay to have the rim changed? (Just a +- range would do)

I need to have my Crest Rims replaced with Flow Ex :)

Anyway, I've got an email from Silverback's SA rep with a couple of suggestions for good wheel builders in CapeTown, this is what he sent to me:

"Olympic Cycles has a mechanic that I trained to build wheels myself many years ago. Right until the time that I worked with him just over a year ago he was building beautiful, reliable and strong wheels.

His name is Sylvis.

Otherwise, BMC, Olympic’s dedicated wheel builder, Lance at Epic Bike Shop and William Keith at William’s Bike Shop are all old-school builders. I have high regard for them all."

I recently changed a rim to Flow Ex. R1600 for the rim, spokes and the build. Using my old hub

Dishing is off as mentioned. This will likely make the wheel less stiff than it should be and since the tread contact patch is now off centre from the steerer tube axis....it will likely make the bike pull to one side when using front brakes.

Needs to be fixed for reliability and for safety reasons.
