Specialized Diverge - Gravel Grinders

Just a question of interest: Why would one get a gravel bike over a good 29er hard tail?

I recently bought a second-hand Sliverback Sola 1 for commuting from Kenilworth to town over road and jeep track - a 11kg 29er hardtail, with light wheels and I have put grippy road / cyclocross tires on it.

It is light, has the gearing, has a front fork for corrugations etc and is very quick on road - not as quick as a road bike, but I am sure as quick as a gravel bike.

So why a gravel bike?

Just asking.

Narrower bars, drops, lighter, 3-4kg is a lot of weight.

29er is very 2010 :P

Any recent Hubber reviews or opinions to share on the Diverge?

Thinking of getting a more road orientated bike for the days I want to hit the tar and pile on some k's while still having the ability to jump onto sidewalks and gravel where I'd like to.

The Sequoia also looks very nice.

From my experience, I've found the following compared to an mtb:

- Better suited gearing (much higher potential top end)

- Far lower maintenance costs

- Versatility is fantastic

- Feels less cumbersome

Getting a second hand Secteur was my best bike decision ever!

Just do it!

After months of wondering if I should, or if it was worth it- Got a Diverge at a bargain end last year- its brilliant, can do roadie rides with the girlfriend, the gearing is great for hills and flats, can pop wheelies, jump pavements, off road is great- just let some air out the tyres - no regrets!

also- hardly any maintenance.
