CX/cyclocross tubeless tyres

Hi guys,

I did try and search for this topic on the forums but found nothing. I purchased a used Scott CX Comp bicycle (2008) recently and was wondering if there are tubeless tyres available for them locally? Will I have to get tubeless specific rims, I did see on the net some guys do there own conversion... Also, can one replace the cantilever brakes? Obviously not discs as the mounts are different.

Thanks for any advice on the topic. Much appreciated.

Yes, there are tubeless/tubeless ready tyres available.  Specialized have their 2Bliss range.

I have successfully converted both Schwalbe's Racing Ralph and Sammy Slick to tubeless. Rims are normal WTB i19 Frequency.

Forgive my ignorance, as I live in Ladismith, I did try to find the Specialized tyres in SA on the web but was unsuccessful. Do the Joburg shops stock them?

Thanks.

Hi Desmond

Have you checked this site out: http://www.cxmagazine.com/going-tubeless-cyclocross-tires-racing-recommendations

I'm busy building up a CX bike and hoping to run it tubeless... Will keep you posted on progress and findings if you're interested.

That is a great article with good tips. How are you proposing to go with your tubeless conversion? Please keep me updated. I am just worried about the burping aspect of tubeless. Are you going to go conventional or do it yourself?

I would like to share my tubeless frustrations so far:

Ive got a standard gt cx with Easton vista sl wheels and the standard Panaracer Cinder x 35c tyres

My first attempt I just taped the rim with insulation tape and fitted a valve and sealed with Fugit. It inflated but the tyre kept on burping.

Realizing the tyre bead is too loose I did a ghetto conversion with a tube. The seal was much better as the tube in between the tyre and the rim made for a much more stable seal.

However I found that running below 3 bar I still get burping! and inflating above that make for a very uncomfortable ride as well as terrible traction.

What have you guys found to be an ideal tyre pressure?

Please share any other cx tubeless experiments good or bad?

Contact Shamus right here on the Hub. (http://www.bicicletta.co.za)

I got a Ritchey tyre from them last week. Ordered and paid for it at about 14h00 and it was delivered to me at 9h30 the next morning.

I had some rims converted to tubeless using tape, added some sealant and a compressor and the job was done.
