What's happening with Morewood

It goes to show how difficult it is to supply a niche market in a country like SA. not only do you need to compete with the international brands on product development, pricing and marketing, but you also need to retain a loyal following (in this case many followed Pat to Pyga), For Morewood to keep on succeeding the needed to keep evolving. They had a cash cow with the Zula. I loved mine and was very heart-broken when I sold her. They also had to decide whether to keep to their roots or whether they needed to change strategy with regards to manufacture, all of this keeping the move from Aluminium to carbon in mind as well as a decisive shift in the wheel size conundrum.

The question is: To what level can they re-invent themselves and do they still have the time and resources to do just that, as Morewood in its current form is all but extinct.

Patrick was Morewood so when he left it was like you took the heart and soul out of it and slowly started to kill it off.

Re-Invented as PYGA :)

The one will carry on where the other left off.

True in many instances, but the concerned consumer will ask whether history will repeat itself in that the principal of the company is going to build a good brand and then move onto the next project. Admittedly a mountain bike has a 3 to 4 year life span when you consider advances in materials used and techniques regarding frame construction as well as component advances, but still... will Pyga be sold and see Pat move on again in the near future? Only time will tell. Perhaps a merger with Momsen? Lets see.

You have many businesses the world over who has lost their pioneer. Think Apple for instance. After Jobs passed away there were many who thought that Apple will be a distant memory come New Years Eve 2014. Yet the iPhone 6 is the fastest selling phone on the market. Other examples include Ford, General Motors, General Electric etc.

Without knowing the inside info at Morewood at the time that Pat left, it is hard to say whether the company was terminal at that point. I suspect not. Unfortunately we will be left guessing as this is not a public company and there is no obligation by the shareholders to share this type of info. We can only conclude based on the current outcomes at Morewood what is going on.

You just need business partners who share the same philosophies and goals.

It happens sometimes in business that partners cant agree on issues and go their seperate ways.

I dont think Pat will fall into that trap twice.

....or he learnt from the Morewood experience so no need for the same at Pyga . As you say time will tell but my view is that is highly unlikely

It did not seem to affect him that much financially when he moved on, he used the move very well to give the new brand a good kickstart, but that trick only works once. I for one would not be surprised to see a merger / take-over by the likes of Momsen in the next 18 months.

I think that Pyga is outselling Momsen but that is just my opinion from what I see out on the trail.

Sales have very little to do with a company's balance sheet, succession planning and product development pipeline. The Vipa may be just a little amuse bouche.

I was at school wit Pat Morewood, although don't know him now other than my old man is friends with his old man, and I can honestly say that I have never met a guy who is more focused on perfection in what he does. He is talented, bright, creative and nobody's fool, so I am pretty certain that he will learn from the last experience as well as continue to supply superb bikes.

Not sure exactly who is left but think it might just be Fabian. I know they sold there oven a while ago as well.

Nope, not true. One of the delays with my frame was the fact they had to have the oven repaired. Perhaps a second oven was sold?

This is like a soap opera, rumour mill is churning!

To be continued, find out if Morewood really did sell their oven....
