I am particularly hard on rear tyres. Conti protection, schwalbe snakeskin maxxis lust - have wrecked them all.

The only tyre so far that has stood up to the abuse is the schwalbe super gravity casing (I have the rock razor on the rear). Sidewalls are super thick, only issue is they only come on the more gravity orientated tyres, and they weigh a ton... But its a small price to pay if you don't have to pop a tube (or two) in every time you go for a ride.

Great tyres but IMPOSSIBLE to get (back) on the rim without assistance...

Heard about this. It would be a nightmare if you slashed the sidewall of the tyre in the middle of nowhere and couldn't get the tyre on or off the rim.

Not too keen on having riding a DH casing.

Might not be of much help since you not a fan of the crossmarks, but what I can say about them is that I have found them to be super strong.

Have had mine for quite some time now and have a lot of wear showing on the sidewalls (from hitting rocks etc) but still no sidewall cuts or punctures.

Personal preference always plays a role here but I vouch for the Conti mountain king and x king big time. Tough as hell, Conti have improved theses tyres a lot since 2012.....touch wood, I've never had sidewall issues.

I like the new Vittoria Sagguro.... I find thye have a better fit and the if you prefer lighter maybe the Vittoria Barzo and Vittoria Peyote could also be great new options... The common thread amongst the new Vittoria is that they all come with the same strong sidewalls and puncture protection whilst featuring new thread patterns.... That's pretty awesome innovation from them !!!

Crossmarks ok for the rear. Not enough (IMHO) grip for front tire. Also great for rear if you do a mix of road and off-road.

Found a combination of Crossmark rear and Rocket Ron front worked great.

Geax sugguaro vittoro rear and conti X king or swalbe nobby nic or racing ralph snakeskin in front if you are a weight weenie .Otherwise maxxis crossmark, ardent combo

Strongest sidewall is the Geax TNT range by far. After that I would say Maxxis LUST and then Schwalbe with Snakeskin. Specialized tires don't have strong enough side walls if you weigh over 75 unless you pump your tires to 2 bar or higher. These recommendations are mostly for the rear. On the front you have a bigger choice as you have less weight on it. In SA last year I ran a Geax saguaro on the reader with a specialized Ground Control on the front. I weigh 95.

Just bought a Maxxis Ardent Race for a back tire for training & got a Rocket Ron front, race with schwalbe RR's at the back but for training they run down so quick. Will post after a couple of rides about the Ardent Race

Bought a Maxxis Ardent 29X2.25 UST LUST - using it for the rear, with a Spez Ground Control 29X2.3 up front.

Have only ridden the Ardent for a few days, but so far it rolls incredibly fast and has bags of grip. The sidewall also feels quite substantial. Seating the tyre was also a breeze. Few pumps on the floorpump and it was sorted.

Word of caution, though. I expected the Ardent to be more substantial in volume, seeing it is a 2.25. It is not. I compared it to a Spez Fast Trak 2.0 on my wife's bike and they are almost identical in width and height.

If you want to run the Ardent as a front tyre on a trail bike, definitely go for the 2.4. If you have an XC bike, the 2.25's would be nice back and front.
