Tyre Choice - Strong Sidewall Protection

I am particularly hard on rear tyres. Conti protection, schwalbe snakeskin maxxis lust - have wrecked them all.

The only tyre so far that has stood up to the abuse is the schwalbe super gravity casing (I have the rock razor on the rear). Sidewalls are super thick, only issue is they only come on the more gravity orientated tyres, and they weigh a ton... But its a small price to pay if you don't have to pop a tube (or two) in every time you go for a ride.

Have you tried the Vittoria Sagauro yet?

I've been running Specialized Ground Control (with the Control casing) for almost a year now and in that time I've lost two tyres due to sidewall cuts. The most recent was over the weekend. I love the Ground Controls for the mileage I get, the grip and low-rolling resistance, but their sidewalls are crap.

I'm looking for some input on a tyre with good sidewall protection, that is similar in design to the Ground Control. A good all-round tyre.

Some of the tyres I'm considering:

  • Continental Mountain King Protection;
  • Continental Trail King (can't see whether this can be run tjooples);
  • Geax/Vittoria Barzo or Gato.
Am I missing any other good tyres? I know tyres are very subjective and comes down to personal preference, but I'd value any constructive input.

You should try the Vittoria Jafaki, Goma or Sagauro.

What about the new Spez Grid kind?

Apparently the Grid is stronger / Tougher than the Ground Control

3 rides on Conti's and the sidewalls look like the tyre is 3 years old, they grow a beard.

they don't bring the Grid tires in to SA.

Conti Mountain Kings are really great. good all condition tyres, good cornering, rubber soft enough to be grippy. having had tried maxxis (last forever, but rubber is harder compound and skatey) and Schwalbe (very soft rubber, great grip, but punctures really easily) for years, the Mountain Kings are superb, front 2.4, back 2.2.

havent tried Vittoria mtb tyres yet, cant comment. Their Road tyres are excellent (Rubino Pro3)

If you are referring to just the Ground Controls then maybe, I'll check tomorrow.

As for no Grid casing tyres, I disagree. I we have stock of Fast Track's in the Grid casing on the floor.

Personal preference always plays a role here but I vouch for the Conti mountain king and x king big time. Tough as hell, Conti have improved theses tyres a lot since 2012.....touch wood, I've never had sidewall issues.

Also a big fan of the MK's... Had them on previous 26er bike and currently have changed front on my 650b Trance, to MK protection. I just ordered another MK for the back. Is there any real reason why I should change that to XK for the back?

GEAX Saguaro. not even a Makita can drill through that sidewall...

Agree, I've tried conti, canus, maxxis, etc. and they generally all seem to work well but invariably the Saguaro is the go to tyre if the going gets rough.

According to Concept store they don't bring in any Grid so I'm telling you what they told me.Your store might stock it then so that means they giving people wrong info.

The XK rolls faster and still has some decent grip if that is what you want.

How recently was this?

2 weeks ago I was looking for a Slaughter in Grid and I was told that Spez don't bring in the Grid tires into SA. It's the same thing I was told 2years ago and now again when I asked.

MK supposed to be more grippy although I personally didnt find that. X king do roll better I feel.....

Loving my 2015 Shwable snakeskin 2'35" Hans Dampf's, grip like mad and seem to be wearing well. Rolling speed is good and they are pretty quiet on tar as well. Sidewalls are great, minimal squirming and you can safely play around with the limits on running them with lower pressures. Highly recommended.

You clearly don't read properly,I said that that is what the Concept store in Waterfall told me. So obviously I was gonna say they do not come in.
