Seat post squeak and loose?

Hello fellow hubbers and repair experts!

I recently upgraded my bike etc. I got a new seatpost (frame and seatpost is carbon).

After the 3rd ride i noticed a squeak coming from somewhere... long story short we found out it was the seatpost, i went to the LBS and the chap there smearted some carbon paste on both the seatpost and inside the opening.

This worked well... but after another 3 rides it was again doing thesame... i took out the seatpost and back and securely tighten it. Again this was perfect but after another 3 rides im back there again.... every time this happens there's a slight drop in height (say around 1mm after 3 rides).

My question is... is this normal? (think not) or what is an easy solution to this?

I am starting to think i should have 1 coat (clearcoat) sprayed over my seatpost to make the seatpost slide in a little tighter.

Any advised will be appreciated!

I have a alu hardtail, and mine was doing the same thing, to the point that I would get embarrassed on the trails. My seatpost also did the creeping thing. The fix for me was to reomve the seatpost, seatclamp and seat and strip and wash the whole bang shoot in a sunlight dishwashing bath. A proper drying and reassembly together with cleaning the inside of the seatpost with a damp cloth seems to be doing the trick for me. It has only been about six or so rides, but so far so good...

At least they used carbon paste... Ive seen LBS's use grease on carbon... so you doing well so far.

Carbon paste normally works well. (assuming SP is correct size)

I assume clamp was correctly torqued.?

Perhaps a new saddle clamp is needed.?

When i tighten it its very secure... and its perfect thereafter, but like i said after 2 rides (say 3h at a time) it starts again.... ang getting worse till i repeat the proses. I dont mind this to be normal but i dont want to tighten carbon on carbon that much... dont want to crack anything.

Double check that the "carbon paste" is indeed carbon paste not normal grease.

Carbon paste should have particles in it to create friction between post and frame. The Taxc stuff is clear/white with tiny white particles. You'll feel them if you rub some paste between your fingers.

Also double check the post diameter versus frame diameter - I've seen a few 30.9mm posts in 31.6mm frames.

Grease the thread of the allen bolt - sometimes the bolt tightens against itself rather than the frame.

If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas :-)

It is definetely carbon paste, the chap applied it while i was watching... im thinking the 30.9 / 31.6mm might be the issue here.

What do you guys think about the extra clearcoat? should work right?

Theoretically yes - I've seen all sorts of fixes that work.

Controlling the coating thickness to 0.35mm might be interesting but there is a tolerance in the seat clamp. Try it and if that fails buy a 31.6mm seat post (if that is the issue).

Hi,

I built up my Carbon frame MTB.. let me guess it's a Offset Seatpost?

It also squeaked a lot!!! and was dropping a few mm.. was a Cobalt Carbon.. threw it away and bought a Zero offset Truvativ NoirT40 Brilliant which I just sold cos I bought a Syntace P6.

No more noise.

Its a branded frame, i saw there's shims that you get ti make it sit tighter... thing is where do one get it in SA... don't think our LBS will hold stock of that (hope they do).

If i get a 30.9 clamp.. will that work better (i didnt think so as the frame is a 31.6) dont want ti force anything...

Having a smaller post in frame can cause major damage. You are essentially clamping the post only at the clamp point. Turning the clamp point into a pivot point. This causes undue stress and eventually leads to failure. I do however think a bike shop would notice that the post is too small. Best option is to check it with a vernier caliper.
