Advice for noob on starter bike

If you are just starting out, try to borrow a bike or, even better, a few bikes. That way you can find out if the sport is for you, in which case it might be worth spending a bit more. Riding a number of bikes will also give you a better idea of the wheel size and geometry that you prefer. Many cyclists have more than one bike in the stable, and being a generally friendly bunch, would not mind having a newbie ride along on a spare bike ;)

OR if you're a bit of a tool like me...  :whistling: and know your way around a few spanners + can use google you can build up a very decent bike for R5k buying from the hub and convincing a few mates to donate random parts your way (beers help here).

My first GT,mostly XT except cranks and brakes, Manitou R7 Air fork, Mavic wheels was built from thehub on a very limited budget, think it weight in @ around 10.5kg odd at the time.

Just takes a bit of time and patience to gather all the bits.

Other option is going Single Speed will save you a few k and you will get a much lighter bike

Sometimes something comes along with some new drivetrain parts, new tyres maybe tubeless, a good frame and nice components  - possibly upgraded for not a lot of cash and then you will have a much better start.

Try have a knowledgeable spotter come with to look or even possibly look for you... but a Makro special is never the answer.

I started with a makro special many moon ago - as mentioned, not the way to go  . Then i bought a bike at sportmanswarehouse - a better option but not the way to go as i ended up replacing every single part on that bike.

Then when the frame finaly gave way, i found a great bike on the hub and really happy with it. Upgrading parts is like an addiction really, sometimes you don't need to upgrade but all the goodies and parts are so awsome that you can't help it

It's a ridiculously expensive sport so maybe take your time and save a little more for something a little better so that you don;t have to spend too much at the get go.

Ok, so i am in the process of buying one of my managers a bike.

I am looking for something entry level.

My one bike guy suggested a Avalanche XXiX Zero.

Its a basic 29r hardtail.

Not too bad, considering the price.

Around R5k to R6k depending

Heres a piccy.
