What other people might think or say does not contribute at all to why I train. Not even my wife or child. I never think about it and in my opinion it is daft to do any sport motivated in any degree by what others say or think. The only times I think of my family is with regards to safety and in thankfulness that they support me and give me the time and space to do an IM.

I might be wrong, but the IM soul is to achieve something which you think is (almost) impossible.

IF THAT is really how YOU feel then im happy for you, i honestly am and i am not stirring here i am just saying, all walks are motivated by completly different things

i used to have a mate we used to wake board with,  he was a pit bull he would never give us the pleasure of dumping him,,,,thats what motivated him he would swallow half the dam before letting go of the ski rope giving us the pleasure of dumping him,,,,,,,different people are "motivated" for different reasons.

if it gets you out of the hole you in it works otherwise you would still be in the hole,,,thats how i see it

Exactly what I think the ad is trying to portray, IMO. A woman who isn't the fittest, isn't the fastest, doesn't have the best technique etc visualising all the reasons she personally wants to continue and make it work. All the naysayers being proven wrong, an attempt to outrun mediocrity and the "but she tried" stigma of tackling something as tough as the IM.

A physical "F*** you!" to all the people who would have looked at her with shame and condescension for entering something "she had no right to enter"

It's a reminder to let it all go, and just give it your all. Become that Iron Man / Iron Lady, and just carry on - because the only way forward is with one foot in front of the other, another pedal stroke, and another arm in front of the head...

PLEASE HOW SERIOUS CAN ONE TAKE THEM I ONCE SAW A GUY IN HIS IM SUIT AT THE AIRPORT

heheheheheheh... they love that branded clothing don't they??

I guess training for IM is a lifestyle and not a hobby. They take these things seriously.

I know, you NEVER stir... ^_^

Sure, those are my motivations and these will differ between individuals. I just find the ads' focus on possible failure in the eyes of others a bit pessimistic and not really what IM is about.

You should have told him to remember getting into the aero position during take-off..

This exactly.

This weekend I ran, swam and cycled further than I ever thought possible for me. You told me three years ago I'd do what I just did, I'd laughed my arse off. That is what makes me go back again and again, and that is what I belief IM to be.

Could you focus on the nay-sayers in your life as primary motivation rather than simply the wonder at you doing something you thought impossible? Off course you can.

I think there is a difference between the two, albeit subtle.
