Brake Rotors - How Much of a Difference Do These Make?

I recently took delivery of my new Specialized Epic Comp. After some deliberation I decided to swap out the Formula C1's which came factory spec with a new set of SLX brakes.

The LBS retained the original Formula C1 rotors and I haven't had any problems. Chris Willemse are currently running a special on some XT rotors. I just wanted to find out how much of a difference rotors make to the braking 'experience'? Would it be worth pulling the trigger on some XT rotors or would this be a waste of money?

IceTech rotors are worth the upgrade.

Goto be ice tech - normal xt does not make that much difference

and with Ice Tech it will only be on heat fade...

In essence it is 1/2 of the frictional surface, so in theory should make as much difference as the pads.

Meh. ICETec - great if you're at the top of a 10km 70 degree slope that goes straight down the mountain. Of no practical use in every day life. Even the 180mm rotors I have are overkill.

I like good old steel rotors - retain their strraightness much better than the alu wedged stuff and much easier to straighten if they get warped. Alu sandwixched rotors are a little too delicate in my opinion.

And without sounding too uneducated, the Ice Tech XT rotors would be compatible with the SLX brakes?

Pretty much all brake rotors are compatible with all callipers.

There are some rotors which are "resin pad only" (which is etched onto the rotor).

And then some hope rotors which are wider than normal

True - I think SRAM rotors are also slightly thicker than Shimano...

I have used almost every rotor/caliper combo and had no issues (apart from some additional set up time because of the varying rotor thicknesses).
