Racing Ralph Help

Hi,

I stuck a racing ralph on my rear early last year in like may/june and it feels like the thing is starting to loose the plot.

The middle nobs are quite worn down and its braking traction way to easily! I spend a lot of time slipping and sliding down the mountain at far slower speeds than usual.

I want to know from those driving the tire how long theirs typically last? Mine is a 26inch that I normally run on 4bar with my weight set @ 75kg, I try to keep off the tar as far as possible. The terrain I ride is mostly Table Mountain/Tokai/Contermans/Meerendal type stuff. On average I will do 2-3 rides a week. The tire is on a Specialized Epic F/S, hasn't even down 1000kms since I got it.

Would it help running lower pressure? MTB Season is around the corner so any help would be appreciated, not so keen on forking out another 700 big ones for a tire...

When I bought my last bike it came fitted with a set of RR. I had read poor reviews on the tyre specifically regarding side wall tears and durability. I decided to give them a go and entered a race. About 3/4 the way through the race I had a side wall tear - no fix possible...finished the race as one unhappy cyclist.

My experiences have been that the tyre wears extremely quickly. It is light and has a great tread, however it should be treated as a race tyre not an everyday tyre.

Also I would suspect that you are running the pressures too high. I am assuming you are running tubes? I would probably recommend dropping the pressure to 3 bar or less given your weight.

On the recommendations side - depends what terrain you ride, but I would without doubt recommend Conti Mountain King...I am sure this should come in 26inch. If possible, be hard core and get a 2.4 set up front! Happy days on the decent!  :clap:  :clap:

Best tyres out there IMO, but I only use it to race front(1.6bar)& back (1.8 bar) 72kgs & then take it off as it wears sooooo quick, but for general riding/training I use maxxis aredent race front & ikon back

4bar!!! That is way too hard!

I weigh 74kg and I run my rear tire at 1.8bar (tubeless, Rock Razor)

Even if you don't have tubeless 2bar should be hard enough not to get snakebites etc.

The lower pressure will also give more grip.

My experience with Schwalbe tires is that they do wear faster than others, try get the Pacestar compound if you running it at the rear. Also try Conti X-King Protection for the rear, good grip but I found they last quite long.

4 BAR... much too hard - drop it to 1.5 odd off road and no more than 2 on road.

I try and keep to offroad 99% even here in Centurion, my last one lasted 1500km on the back.

Running 1.6 bar back, can they even go to 4bar? You will have ZERO grip on 4 bar on dirt

Its an awesome tire which is why I would love to keep using it, but I've gone through 2 of them since mid 2013 both UST with Snake Skin, although the first one went because I was spending loads of time on the road, so I was hoping this one would last way longer.

Will bring down the pressure to 2 bar or lower see how it goes. Only been trying the higher pressure since December after I had the wheel come off rim on some technical stuff and I have general bad luck with side walls.

Slightly off topic but i would appreciate thehub brains trust's view on a tyre for a race like sani:

1. Racing Ralphs;

2. Conti Racekings;

3. Other options - like WTB?

Whats the weather going to be like? :)

Dry - Racing ralph rear, and rocket ron front.

Wet - Rocket ron rear and knobby nick front.

You could also try Rockets rons front and rear... think I am going to run that for J2C

Snakeskin of course...

I have Nobby Nic on the front and it's pretty awesome. Except for this disconcerting issue.

have you been putting your knee down when you corner?

there is not much rubber covering the sidewalls, the nylon inner shows through pretty quickly with wear, not sure if it happens on all of them, but I've had it with RR's and Conti MK's

That is strange because they are the UST ones...

"UST = more rubber in the sidewall for air seal + protection

Snake skin = a fabric in the sidewall for protection" -from what I have googled

The RR evo's are poor, my LBS has a box of them which came on new bikes but the owners have swapped for other tires. I  hear the snakeskin are much better though
