Spruit from Sunninghill

I generally cycle the Spruit from PnP on Nicol through to Emmarentia, Albert's Farm and Northcliff water tower. Keen to try a bit of a longer route and want to start from Sunninghill. Does anyone know if you can get onto the Spruit from Chilli Lane or perhaps the Keg? Want to avoid cycling down Rivonia and onto Witkoppen.

Thanks

Sure you can park at Cambridge Crossing shopping centre

Then head down the hill and right onto the Spruit and all the way up to Emmarentia Dam

Or from Cambridge up the hill, left onto Cambridge Rd and str8, then left down Cowley Rd, and down to the Spruit and right up to Emmarentia (this way bypasses the vagrants down by the N1)

There are vagrants along the way- it is a nice route except for this- preferably maybe do not cycle it alone- I used to cycle this route a lot but do not like the vagrants (they are to be found more and more, and in more places)

The ex mate I cycled with on this route is a Stravasshole who wouldn't stop if you had a bike problem or fell or anything so I'd be cycling on my own in any case in these sections often. I prefer the Spruit further up and cycling in other places now

You can access the trail from behind Chilli Lane shopping center as well. Walk accross the Sand River weir/pipe bridge and follow the trail on the other side.

You'll hit Witkoppen where the others already mentioned.

Start / park at PWC, do a couple of laps, and freewheel down to Riverside shopping centre. Access the Spruit from there, and ride as far as you want....Grab breakfast at the brilliant little coffee shop at Riverside ( I think it's called Jackson's ) and do the nasty climb back to your car.

Always a rewarding and fun ride!

Thanks for the replies guys. Will try the Chilli Lane option and there will definitely be at least two of us so should be safe. Prefer battling vagrants than the madness of taxi's on Rivonia and Witkoppen!

Trouble with PWC is the bloody cost when majority of trails are closed. Rode the new Green Mile a few weeks back though and was brilliant!

Yeah, the traffic on Riviona and Witkoppen is crazy! You won't see any "marshals" from chilli lane to Witkoppen. Bridge under the highway just after Witkoppen there are about 6-8 guys living there but they are friendly. I commute through there from Parktown to Midrand at least once a week and never feel threatened. Having said that: always keep your eyes open and stay aware of your surroundings!!

Ended up joining from Chilli Lane on Sunday and was an absolute breeze. The gentlemen under the N1 were still fast asleep and then gone by the time we came back through. Didn't feel threatened at any points and good to avoid Rivonia/Witkoppen traffic.

Gotta love such a great MTB strip right on our doorstep!

Another option is past sunninghill hospital over witkoppen  down the servitude of bowling , right into 8th ave , cross the sandspruit up to behind  macdonalds on rivonia rd , than down bryanston drive to join spruit at Builders express.  Adds some elevation to ride ;-)
